"In the early 2000's, SS was dropped back down to the "maintstream." "
I still don't consider the SS's of the 2000's mainstream for the Camaro. What do you mean? Do you say this just because it's the same engine? I don't get it.

Again, the Z28 was like 1LE built to allow Chevy to compete in SCCA. Nothing more, nothing less.
The 5th gen Z28 should be true to it's roots as bare bones no options (especially no automatic transmission) race track car with a VERY agressive suspension package. If it means in order to allow any engine to compete in SCCA, Grand Am, Rolex, etc. then I in my opinion it's ok to use it. But........ If they are just going with a LSA because because, to me that's retarded as that should be the new "SS396" Camaro SS, not a Z28.
Back in the day a 396 was unstoppable. Yes the 302 Z cars were quick but you had to rev the holy **** out of them off the line. Honestly though with any of those cars it all came down to rear end gearing. a L48 350 with 4.10s would walk a 375hp L78 396 all day long if it had a 3.07 rear gear. You have to remember most cars (unless special ordered) came with high ratios because the speed limit on the highway was 70MPH and your transmission only had 3 or 4 gears.

I have a 99 Z/28 that i ordered new, There was a strike at the plant that year, it took me about 3 or 4 months for delivery. Its a NO option coupe except for the 1LE package which is listed on the window sticker as Supersport suspension. I didnt want an SS just a Black 6 speed 1LE.Most SSs had to much extra equip. I seem to remember the option was $1200. It has Koni adjustable shocks, etc. I actually had 3 T/As before it, wanted a Formula but the dealers wouldnt help and couldnt get a true stripper in the Pontiac.Didnt even want A/C but couldnt delete it. It still hauls azz but rides extremely hard.

Back in the day, nobody except TransAm racers cared about street handling. SS396 Camaros were moping up the streets w/ 302" Z28s. Only reason Z28 notoriety lived through the late '70s, '80 and mid '90s was because Chevy **** canned the SS. Sure, Chevy put a SS badge on more than just Camaros, but they also put Zxx badges on more than just Camaros (Z24, Z36, Z06.....).
Z28 >> SS??? Sacralidge!!!

If your comparing the z28 camaro of the late sixties and the seventies to the SS you cant really because they were in totally different markets. The SS package was created to compete with other companies in the horsepower craze. which was not about handling or any of that bs but instead about trying to get as much power as they were possibly allowed out of an engine and putting that up against other companies. Thus why it was offered on chevelles, novas etc.... the z28 camaro was designated to a select few people because at the time trans am racing was not that big of a market especially for american companies the 302 was the largest engine the were legally allowed to use inable to still compete in the circuit and although the didnt put empressive amounts of power out of these cars they were not near the power put out of LS5, LS6 454's 396's 455's and other motors of the time.
Also back to the discussion on 4th gen z28 vs ss i have a 96 and it is rated at 310 hp compared to the z cars 285 how is that seen as the top dog just questioning dont know much about newer cars of this time more a sixities muscle if need any info on that just let me know been researching for years

This is an SLP production thing from 2002. I haven't seen one of these for any other year unfortunately.

It was originally posted on 35thle.com's message board and as you can see, it's impossible to narrow down by color. :-\
I also don't remember off the top of my head what day Camaro production stopped, so these may not be totaled numbers. I know the 35th Anniversary Editions are totaled though.

So in theory, IF production ended when this sheet was printed, and if I'm reading this correctly there would have been a total of 218 SS's with the 1LE package and of that 218, 58 were also 35th Pkg. Since mine is not a 35th pkg, it is 1 of 160 with the 1LE option. Correct?
