Default True WS6/SS from VIN?

Can it be determined if the car is a true WS6/SS from the VIN? The free Carfax page says 1998 PONTIAC FIREBIRD FORMULA/TRANS AM, but the guy says it is a WS6. Do all WS6s say the same thing, or is he pulling my leg? The price is just too cheap...

I think if you contact a dealer with the VIN they'd be able to tell you if it was a true WS6/SS..but I'm not sure on that. Look at or get the guy to get you a picture of the sticker on the door jam. WS6's will have the code on the sticker along with the VIN on the sticker. (I believe SS's have a certain code to, but I don't know what it is).

Well, I knew it would be in the door jam, but thanks for the reply. The FAQ has the codes for all the special models, including SS.

I wish there was a way to tell from the VIN on the Internet.

get the vin from him and if you go to your local GM dealer's parts department they can look up the RPO codes which are on the door sticker.

Good advice for sure, but I did read it. I guess I consider it part of the FAQ. I was looking for a way to tell if the car was a WS6 by the VIN.

I asked the guy to send me a pic of the door jam, but I didn't want to have to do that.

That's the only way you'll be able to tell if you don't look at the door sticker.

It's not in the vin at all, door sticker only and if the seller is 100% legit he'd have no problem providing you that info, or even a sales invoice which would state WS6 performance package because WS6 is a factory option.

Any SS will have been worked over by SLP and,
if you send them your VIN, they will tell you if it
is "one of theirs". But as far as the VIN being in
any way "special", I don't think so - they just
took Z/28s off the end of the production line,
did their thing, and reinserted them to the
dealerships (as evidenced by the huge amount of
"take-off" parts thay had for sale).

as stated before me, the guy should have no problem sending you the pictures if he isnt a crook. YOU are the buyer of the car, dont be timid! ask whatever whenever you want. hes the one tring to sell something for 1000s of dollars, he should have to provide whatever you want. and if he is hesitant, go find another car!

oh, and SS isnt in the vin. not sure about WS6.

The dealership can run the VIN and they will then know exactly what options were on the car down to the color of it. That's the only place that can use the VIN to determine options.

Yes it's a true WS6 going by the vin you provided.... Oh, and for those who were wondering what the RPO code is for the SS, it's WU8.

I read somewhere on here that if the car came with 17's from the factory, there will be a spacer between the bumpstop over the differential. This gives the extra clearance for the 17's...??? Don't know if that will help. I'm stuck in the same situation with my car. I bought it with 16" wheels and the codes on the doors are missing since it has been repainted. Anyway, it say's WS6 on the back, has a Ram-Air hood, so I'm happy
