Very cool thread!

I just came across this. And being that I'm a Pontiac fan, I enjoyed reading the article.

I have driven the 1 of 1 X-men car. I went on a road trip with my friend (the owner of it) to pick it up. We left California and towed his car trailer back to Troy, MI to pick it up.

We got to meet the people of SLP and take a tour if there design and fabrication shop.
That was an awesome adventure. The funniest part was when we left CA, it was 80 degrees here and we were all sunburnt. We got to MI and it was snowing and about 30 degrees outside. We drove non-stop through the night taking shifts to drive. So when we stopped for breakfast, we still all had our shorts and flip flops on. The look we got when we walked into a Denny's was classic! Everyone stopped there eating to stare at the 3 sunburnt Californians in shorts, t-shirts, and flip flops.

He still has that X-man car. He took it to a lot of car shows. That was a great time!

Hell, I still own my Firebird Formula!
I agree with the author. I like the plain look of the Formula over the Trans Am. Since mine is a 2002, the WS6 option was unavailable. So I ordered the car as a base Formula and I installed a WS6 hood later on.
I've always enjoyed the car.. I took delivery of it on Dec. 27, 2001. It is still in my garage all these years later. I drive it when I can but I've only been able to put about 26k miles on it.

Pontiac has always had a cool history and I will always be a fan!

Thank you to the author for a great article!

I have seen those thirdgen 'verts. I think they were an ASC conversion, not an actual GM build.

Cool old thread- I thought I posted this a while back but guess I didn't. Here is a pic of my 97 Formula WS6 vert. I still have the factory 16" wheels but the 94 Firehawk wheels look a lot better:

My recollection on the 3rd gen 'verts (which admittedly may be a bit fuzzy) is that you could get this conversion done by a 3rd party on the earlier models, and then later (I'm thinking around '88) that GM started offering a convertable body style from the factory for both the Camaro and Firebird. Due to a more flexible body, there were certain restrictions on what drivetrain was available in the 'verts, no 5-spd manual on the 5.0L cars, and no 5.7L option (5.0L auto only in the 'verts). Now while GM did use ASC to provide the convertable parts (like they did on the 4th gen 'verts), and the 'verts may have been physically sent to ASC for the installation of the parts (not unlike the WS6 coversions on the 98+ Formulas/TAs) the 'vert body style was definately available from "the factory" in the later 3rd gen years.

Now that particular car in the photo looks like its one of the earler 3rd party conversions, not a factory-built 'vert. You may very well be correct that this was the work of ASC in their early days.

I've seem to remember seeing this single-digit-rare car before, I remember looking it up: One of 7 48U Dk Grn Met '97 WS6 Formulas built (2 w/ M6, 5 w/ A4). Very nice.

If this is a 6 speed, you've got something REALLY good here.

I wish! It's just an A4; but I will say this is by far the fastest stock LT 1 I've ever driven. Feels more like my 95 Hawk that has full bolt ons. This Formula doesn't even have a K & N filter.

WS6 Formula convertible, even with auto is still very rare and desireable.

how about a 02 nhra vert with a m6? Only 16 made in 02 with that combo. I believe 548 for the year. The nhra isn't really anything special but they seem to be desirable.

I know my car isn't super rare but I doubt there were too many exactly like it. It's a red 95 z28 with black hard top. Traction control, graphite leather, M6. Common color yes, but those exact options pry not alot of them i'm thinking. This is a cool thread even though it's almost ten years old!

You might be surprized how rare your car might be, especially w/ the M6. Before I purchased my '98 WS6 (1 of 50 w/ WS6, M6, black/black top, graphite leather) I traded in my '94 Z28 'vert ("Polo" green, M6, tan cloth, black top), which I later determined to be 1 of only 37 with that color/trans combo. Who would've guessed that a "plain old" Z28 would end up being a more rare trans/color combo than a WS6 (and of the most rare model year at that). I guess that triple-black thing killed the rarity factor though.

Wow that is cool man you had a super rare Lt1 car and didn't even know it! With it being a convertible and an M6 it was already pretty rare and then add the interior options. I would like to find out how many are exactly like mine. Thanks for posting the diagrams of the production #'s, is 1995 included on there? It seems like it goes from 94 to 96 I could be wrong though. P.S Nice firebird!

Ok so I checked out all the stats on my car and they are as follows.

There were 1,559 bright red hard top m6 z28's.
1,177 of them had traction control
2,183 had the am/fm casette delco/bose sound system
2,625 had graphite leather with 6 way pwr driver seat.

Out of the 9,209 M6 z28 coupes and 3,010 hard tops made that year the car seems pretty rare but nothing to write home about lol.

Minor corrections, that 1,559 is total red M6 Z28 coupes (both T-top & hard-top). I didn't breakout the T-top / Hard-tops by color.

It'd be more accurate to break-down your car like this:

Total '95 Z28 Coupes: 33285
w/ M6: 9209 (27.7%)
w/ M6 & HT: 3010 (9.0%)
w/ M6 & UU8 Radio: 2183 (6.6%)
w/ M6 & 81U Red: 1559 (4.7%)
w/ M6 & Graphite Leather / AG1 seats: 2625 (7.9%)

Considering that HTs made up less than 10% of the M6 Z28 coupes, yours is probably less than 1 of 200 M6 HT Red Z28s built in '95, possibly as rare as 1/140.
