I guess these stock style crossmembers keep all the torque arm stress off the trans tailshaft??

The crossmember with torque arm mount will not put any stress on the transmission under braking or WOT,it will also transfer all of torque to the body to plant the tires and allow for better tire bite.

You will also see less angle change in the u-joints under all conditions,
as the foward part of the torque arm in not allowed to push or pull the engine/transmission on its mounts as with the stock GM mounting.

This means that the rear will stay in location going around turns or going down the strip.
