Default Have I set it up wrong? 10" sub & 500w amp...

I've had a 500 watt amp and 10" alpine sub installed for less than a year, and I'm thinking of removing them....

The set up sounds okay, but I can't seem to get it to sound great, even after lots of tweaking. There just seems to be no good quality, it's either thumping hard with not much other sound, or I've got the rest of the sound with not much thump.

Maybe I wired it up wrong.
If I've wired it up wrong would it work okay and just not sound great?
Or is it that if it works it is wired up right?

Maybe I was expecting too much.
Maybe it's because I've still got the stock HU.

What does the rest of the system consist of? What specifically do you have in the car currently? Need a little more to go on to see what can be done.

Hi,

Thanks for your reply.

I currently have Alpine speakers in the doors and a Alpine sub and amp, the rest of the speakers and HU is stock.

Maybe I wired over from the stock amp wrong?

yea ... your not going to get much out of the stock wiring and HU ... it sounds good for a couple of months but once you get use to it, like all systems', you tend to want more. I had mine wired like that for a couple of years' until the HU went then I just re-wired the whole system and what a difference that was.

Thanks for your replies.

I'm a real new to audio, so please bear with me if I'm a little slow.

how did you wire the audio output to the amp? does your amp have a filter?
I can't rember how I wired the audio output to the amp, I'll have to have a look see to rember (It's dark outside now).
The amp I bought was a Alpine M500, and has a 15Hz Subsonic Filter.

I too used the RCA input, but I didn't disconnect my rear speakers, I tapped off the passenger side to my amp...

whats up paul. I believe i helped you when you were putting it all in. Check where you made your connections for the line level convertor; how you wired the sub itself, and then I think we can pass some help along. Im sure the stock hu isnt helping a ton, but it shoudl still sound good. I have the same amp sub as you and it sounds great.

Hey Brandon, good to see you're still on here.
It's raining pretty good at the moment, when it clears out and I get a window, I'll double check those things.

Thanks again,

Paul.

Sorry for the delayed reply, been a host of different reasons...

Anyway, I'm fairly sure 90% of the setup is correct, the only part I'm not sure about is where I wired the RCA jacks to.

I tapped off the rear passenger speaker in the trunk, into a devise that plugs into the RCA jacks....

I guess maybe it's the settings that I'm struggling with, or is the RCA to speaker wrong?

Thanks alot for the advise,

Paul.

ok. try disconnecting the rca connection completely. Crank it up and see how it sounds. If everything sounds good, just no low end, you just narrowed your search down to the amp and sub settup. Did you wire into two different speakers[i.e. left and right inputs]? If so try reversing one set[positive and negative]. If you wired the left correctly and right in reverse, or vise versa, it will sound terrible. If not that try changing to the sail panel speakers for your rca input.

Hey Brandon, thanks for your reply.

I'll give that a try tomorrow.

The rear passenger trunk speaker has two small speakers that I wired into.

When you say did I wire into two different speakers, do you mean these two speakers, or the other one drivers side?

I plugged the rca leads into a line level adaptor, that had 4 wires that I soldered to the rear trunk passenger speakers. I got the + & - the right way for sure.

l can post up a picture so you can see what I done if you need me to.....

Thanks again for all the help.

If you tapped off of the very rear speakers, i would disconnect from there and reconnect at the sail panel speakers.

taping in to the hatch speakers wont give you much bass the have a factory x-over on them so the dont see much bass.
when my car had the same set up like yours(thats long gone im all aftermarket) i tapped in to the front door speakers and it sounded really good but you can also tap in to the sail panel speakers.
your problem is you taped in to speakers that dont see to much badd there just for mids and highs.,
