Default Alternative Sub location

Obviously the most common spots for subs are in the cubby hole or in the t-top storage area. Has anyone ever tried building a box that would fit behind the rear seats on the "hump?" (I think its the gas tank?)

The concerns I can think of when picturing this in my head are a) having the subs sit low enough so that visibility is not sacrificed or is a minimal loss b) having enough volume in the box to be adequate for the subs and c) making this look good

I don't know much about the physics of sub boxes and the volume of air required for efficient use of subs nor do I know if there are subs out their that are short enough to not make visibility an issue.

Thoughts?

There are a few people who have done it right behind the rear seats but you can't get a whole lot of room behind it unless you do one 12" (maybe two but haven't seen it) or two 10" subs. And depending on the box height it can hinder seeing out of your rear view mirror. You could do a sealed 12" and that's really about it I would think. I had two 10's there for a few weeks and didn't like it so I scrapped that set up and went a little bigger and put a box in the ttop well.

In the fenders or building a box behind the dash which doesn't always work out good. The only other options if you don't want them in the trunk. The gas tank is right under that hump and 99% people screw into it and put a hole into the tank

I don't, it was awhile ago and it was a crappy setup. Basically two 10's in a sealed box sitting directly behind the seat. Any reason for wanting to locate them somewhere else or just curious?

I had two 12's sittin behind the front seats at one point. I had the back part of the back set laid down and I built a box for the subs and had the box sittin on the flat part of the back seat. I later sold everything including the box, subs, amp for a little more than what I had in the whole set-up. Now I'm just running after market speakers in place of the factory speakers and does me just right. Everyones different though.

Mainly curiosity and the fact that I'm a little OCD so I'm not happy with just one sub in the cubby hole because it's not symmetrical. I'd rather have two subs somewhere but I don't wanna sacrifice my storage area so I thought, "why not on the hump?"

I've seen stealth boxes for both the drivers and passenger side but I'm not sure how hard it is to find one for the passenger side.

I had a setup like this as well and I'd say that was the worst sounding spot I had them. It was night and day difference between there and in the ttop well so to OP I wouldn't go that route.

I guess I might be able to answer your question about placing the box on the "HUMP".
This SEALED box contains ..2 (12") clarion xw-series woofers... 2 (630 watt) clarion amps.
all together this set up has put out over 144.2 DB's with minor adjustment on the amps. That is way louder then you will ever need to play music.

I thought the exact same thing, so I built a box (fiberglass and mdf) myself that holds a single 12 and 2 small amps. It sits flush with the top of the back seat heightwise, and matches the contours of the plastic panels on the sides. It doesn't obstruct my view out the back at all, but I can still see it (and smile) when I look in the rearview. While I don't listen to it cranked up (the bass boost on the amp is off), it looks and sounds great, plus I have the satisfaction of knowing that I did it myself. It was my first experience with fiberglass, so the finish wasn't great, but I wrapped it in matte black vinyl, so it wasn't a big deal. I don't remember the volume offhand, but it was somewhere around 1.2 cu ft, which is plenty for a small 12 in a sealed box. I'll get some pics up later

Look into slimline subs so you wouldn't need a tall box that would block your view from the hatch.

As promised, pics:

Hard to see the contour, but it fits right along the panel

Sits flush with the back seat. You can see it, but the view out the window is unobstructed

Brutalis, that's exactly what I'm looking to do! Thanks so much! Is that a box and then contoured side pieces or is it all one piece?

A bit of both. Its an mdf box the width of the top flat, but the bottom sheet is oversized and cut to contour with a bandsaw. Then i put in some small sheets at an angle to hold the amps (the second one isn't in yet) and pulled fleece over the whole thing. Cutting and sewing the vinyl was the hardest part, honestly.
