Default Head unit mount for a Firebird

I'm installing an aftermarket HU in my Formula and all the HU mounts I have found for it make the HU stick out about a 1/2 inch. Is it not possible to have the HU sit flush with the mount? I searched but didn't come up with any thing.

Did you cut the little plastic "mount" in the hole in the dash where the stock radio mounts. It is toward the rear inside the hole. This is neccesary to make any aftermarket radio slide back fully. Other than that it is best to try and make all the RCAs and other wires kind of sit on top of the HU or in the holes to the sides as best you can. It will fit but does take some effort. My JVC has a gaggle of wires for this and that but it all fits in there fine once you move everything around a it. I also zip tied alot to make it neater.

I believe he is actually talking about the resize kit to make an aftermarket stereo fit.

Check out Crutchfield. That's where I got mine.

It might be hard to see in this pic but if you look it has the HU sticking out quite a bit.

The one for the Camaro's sit flush.

Is there something different about the Firebird's dash? Every store in town wants to sell the type of mounting kit in the first link.

Just get that 2nd one for the Camaro. They're both the same size, there's really no difference. I think they just refer the 1st one because they think it cosmetically fits better with the bezel around the radio, since it would stick out and sit flush with it. When, most people don't really want that. You could always also get an HUMount to spice things up.

I have both available from Metra. I used to have a flat faced one in my T/A. Fits fine as the places where the screws mount are the same in both cars.

Well **** i wish i would have seen this last night. I just bought an Alpine iDA-X300 and it came w/ the pontiac piece. I'd rather it mount flush....Oh well I can just order it down the road if the pontiac one bothers me too much

I was just wondering if space was so tight back there the Firebirds had to use the extended mount kit. I have no problem cutting any thing to make it fit, hell I'd even cut the damn firewall before I have the HU sticking out of the dash like some **** off of Starwars.

I remember doing something like that in my '99 Z28 but that was 6+ years ago. I'm sure it will come back to me once I pull the head unit out.

Depth is tight with a 6-1/2" deep HU and the HU mount (which makes the radio sit perfectly flush- it's nice!), but it fits..

EDIT: I did break off the plastic tab thingy and bent the metal tab inside the dash, but that's no big deal.
