Question stereo will not work unless key is turned all the way

i was wondering why i cant listen to the radio when my car is not on. I put the key in and turn it once and the radio does not turn on. I can turn the key back or forward once and it does not work. I was just suprized that you have to have the car on is this normal??? The previous owner had put in a sony explode head unit i dk if that has an affect on the problem?

The radio doesn't work when the key is in the accessory position (turn back from the off position)? It is possible that the previous owner wired the head unit to an ignition wire instead of an accessory wire although why anyone would do that is beyond me.

Take the stereo out and check if the cables are connected properly, you would be surprised how people secure the cables. The cables of the speakers in my car were secured by electrical tape, thats why they sounded so bad.

it has nothing to do with how his wires are secured, clearly someone tapped into a wire somewhere else instead of using the ignition wire in the harness
