Bolt-on ls1 vs evo
Buddy's car 98 SS Mods: lt's lm1 lid bbk tb And me as a passenger. The evo had what sounds like a turbo-back exhaust and a boost controller. We do a run from a real low roll maybe 15-20. On the hit the ss takes about a half a car real fast. Second was pretty even maybe another 1/4 car for the ss. Third we walk slowly shutting down around 110-120. We run again from about a 40 roll this time the evo gets about 1/4 car held for a bit then slowly lost ground till the SS won by about 1 1/2 cars. Does anyone else notice that the evo/sti/cyclone guys never seem to get you out of the hole? I would think these guys would be all over dig runs. Maybe there just a lil in my area. All the sti and evos i have raced have seem to hold better from a roll...

evo/sti's didnt come with a stock 2-step. evos came with a rev limiter for whenver your at a stop u can rev it past a certain rpm. so noobs dont do major clutch dumps.
nice kill btw

Nice kill.
As the other guys said, its very difficult to launch one of those cars off the line without bogging, since you can't launch in boost. So basically you're trying to launch an AWD car with a gutless low compression 4 cylinder without bogging it to the point of almost stalling. Most drivers can't do it, so they get a two step so they can boost off the line.

While a 2 step helps tremendously, you can still launch an AWD turbo 4 with zero boost. It's something called a driver mod. On some other cars with a little more power, launching with boost can make the launches that much better on street tires since the car will not spin the hell out of the tires.

that makes sense. I was wondering how they couldnt build boost, but my last turbo vehicle had an auto and a high stall. Those Evo's and STI's can get brutal though. Even a 5K clutch dump would bog?? Not that it matters I need drag radials if I ever plan on starting from a low speed. These run craps are horrifying

It's not a stupid question at all. From the factory the Evo WILL build boost for a launch. Just to repeat that...the Evo will boost for a luanch off the showroom floor. Put in 1st gear, depress the clutch and floor it. You'll build boost at the rev limiter (between 5K and 5.5K RPM's depending on the model year).

I built around 6-7psi stock with the stationary limiter.
