Default My first real run in with a charger

Well I was heading home with some trafic in front of me when this black Charger keeps jumping on my ***. I get through trafic and he follows. I pulled him right off the bat. I let him get next to me. I wanted to honk off but he nails it. I down shift to 3rd and pull him almost all the way back in before I let off, not getting a ticket for a car I was pulling that hard.
We stop a 7/11 and talk. He said he knew I was pulling him both times and asked my mods and to look under my hood. He said was the daytona package with no stripes. It said RT on the front grill. He had Magna Flow exhaust, Hand held tune and CAI. He said his car dynoed 375RWHP. Overall a cool guy and is waiting for his warrenty to be up before he mods heavy.
How well do those car respond to mods? Oh yeah it was an automatic with Mercades suspension and transmission he said.

SRT8 model??? If he dyno'd 375whp that sounds about right being a 425fhp engine. Unless he's just guesstimating which is more likely the case...

Basically they're pretty large cars (~3800+ lbs) with bad gearing and an open diff (for some odd reason).

hmmm unless a new model is out, Daytona's have the 5.7hemi...and would never dyno near 375rwhp with just exhaust tune and intake. Hmmm..but you saw R/T on the grill...maybe he meant flywheel..which is a more realistic "estimate".

Nice kill eitherway

And there's not much of an aftermarket for them...

However i did see a vid of one (with upgraded axle shafts) pull off a 10 sec 1/4 mile with a 250 shot of juice and supporting bolt-ons (exhaust, cai, etc).

Yeah, R/T w/ 5.7 he MUST have meant 375fhp. No surprise you were pulling him hard.

I don't know much about them, just going on what he told so it could be total bullshit. His engine said Hemi on the engine cover that covered the intake and the heads so all I could see under his hood was the CAI. Thats also why I wondering how well they responded to mods.

they respond to mods...decently...but its still a mid to low 14 second car to start with. with all those mods i wouldn't be surprised if he was still in the 14s. what color was the engine cover? with the daytonas they are painted to same color as car if i recall.

There are several variations of the late model "Hemi". The 5.7 makes ~375fhp. The 6.2(?) makes 425fhp and is what they put in the SRT8's. I'm sure they both respond very well to mods but the aftermarket just hasn't jumped on the Hemi boat. Now with the Challenger we may see better support but considering that none of the "younger" crowd can even afford them I don't see it happening soon...

It has to be older. He told me it had 50 some thousand miles on it. I guess it all depends how much of what he told me is bullshit, I don't see any reason for him to lie but who knows. Thanks for the info guys.

The 5.7L Hemi Chargers have been around for a great number of years. He's prolly thinking... ok I have 350hp stock so my cai/tune/exhaust (or whatever) is gaining me another 25hp, hence the 375hp quote. I don't think he was lying to you but maybe just didn't know for sure... maybe they're underrated and he really is putting down 375? Maybe they generate that much from a tune/cai? who knows.

And damn... wish I was still waiting on my warranty to expire at 50k miles...

good kill. that car posed no threat to you. there is no doubt you creamed them. if the car was black it was not a daytona. it was just the r/t 340 fhp pre 09. don't be fooled there is a good after market for the chargers it's just everything is expensive. they respond very well to mods especially the tune.

OP, nice kill. You need to run a tuned SRT-8 but even then those gears you have will mean LS1 a win for sure. (what is dumdumdum??!?) dumdumdum "dumdumdum"?

3900+ with no heavy options (roof, etc). Definitely not 375 Rwhp, that's for sure.

The open diff can suck but doesn't hurt at the dragstrip unless power levels go way up. Makes it very predictable, though.

Actually everything is out now except a roots-type blower and gears.

Actually a canned-tune R/T will hit mid 13s with cool air at around 103-104mph.

LoL a "dumdumdum" is an SRT8 minus 4 cylinders and is a neon base. See here Ill say it,

dumdumdumdum <---that was actually "s" & "r" & "t" & "4" without the quotes, spaces, and ampersands. Apparently with the dumdumdumdum's introduction, a ton of the skittle owners thought they were LS1 killers. Little did they realize the LS1 were not actually racing.

mid to high 13s for the pre 09 RT IF its not heatsoaked at all, an excellent tune, an impecable driver or on drag radials, and with good weather. Personally I have yet to see it. Father inlaws 300c RT with a canned tune is still a dog compared to my GTO...and Id estimate at best a mid 14. Seriously from a dig, I gave him the hit and a full car length. By 40 mph (top of 1st) I was passing him hard. 2nd gear was just mean as by 60 mph I had a good 4 to 5 car lenghts. The stock RTs at the local track here struggle to get to 14.0...

supercharger on the 6.1? That'd be fun.

Out here in AZ I've seen a stock r/t run 14.7@92mph, bracket racing... that was his best. Probably a bad driver. I saw a Magnum r/t running 15.1@90 or so with an intake too. Course AZ blows. I have read about R/T hitting low 14s or high 13s. My stepfathers 06 daytona with intake feels like it might hit 100mph in the quarter.
