Default 02 Z28 vs 300ZX TT?

My car is an 02 Z28 M6 with SLP Catback and an K&N FPIK. So I was headed to the movies tonight to see Observe and Report and as a got on the freeway I see a 300zx coming up in the fast lane. I follow him for about a mile or two then get up next to him and motion to run them. He nods and we both drop it. I was in 3rd at about 65. I waved him to hit and he did. He jumped out about a half a car before I reeled him in and put about 4 cars on him up to 110. Does that sound right for a TT? I could have sworn I heard turbo spool when he hit it but I would have thought it would have been a lot closer.

They typically trap about 102mph (100-103).

If he was stock then it sounds about right.

yea they come stock twin turbo. 300hp from the factory not sure what they actually dyno. but there not really pigs when you consider there the same weight pretty much as the GTO or camaro/TA convertibles. they normally run mid 13's but people have dipped them into 13.2/13.3 range stock. there nice cars. for all intensive purposes from a dig in the 1/4 they are a really good run for an ls1.

Intents and purposes* . But yes, they were definitely good running cars for their day. Sounds like he was stock or very close to it.

Yeah, you probably ran up against a well driven stock car (or with similar boltons to yours). I was dead even with a manual TT (that had exhaust the second time we saw eachother), on several occasions and several runs from 40-120 in my stock GS400 lexus.
Didn't matter if he had a passenger or not - still even.

We probably ran 3 times over a period of a year.

dang you Irunelevens I pull a nice good post finally and you find something wrong with it!!!

anyhow exactly what you said. for being made in the early 90's those cars are fast. and still look better than a lot of cars made now.

They weigh about the same as a regular LS1 fbody does...stock 300ZX TTs are about 3480lbs. They make 300HP at the crank and about 250WHP at the wheels stock. A well running/driven stock TT Z should run mid-high 13s in the 102-104MPH range. Sounds like he raced a stock one which should get walked by a good running stock LS1. They do however respond very well to mods which is why it was likely a stock car, with just simple bolt ons (Intake/exhaust/boost&tune) they can gain 100+WHP and dip into the mid-low 12s in the 108-114MPH range. For reference purposes the non-turbo 300ZXs weigh about 3280lbs make 222HP and typically run around a 15.0 at 91-93MPH, and mid 14s at 94-98MPH with basic bolt ons.

Cool race, congrats on the win

I owned a TT Z32 and they DO NOT hang with stock LS1s. They do though respond well to light mods and a tune for higher boost (their engine bays are rediculously tight though so you are going to WANT to drop the engine for major mods)
They are definitely pretty quick for an early 90's sports car but they aren't low 13 second cars.
More like mid to high 13's (usually high 13's).
Their only major downfall is that they are surprisingly heavy for their size, as others have mentioned.

they are not heavy cars, try around 3200lbs for the tt models, google it! these cars can be dangerous because they are boosted, and pretty light for what they are. My friend has one also a tt, and we raced, I beat him, but it wasnt by much... stock they only run about a 13.5- 14.0 i think, but they are boosted, and it doesnt take very much to make them fast.

specs

Horsepower 300bhp @ 6400rpm
Torque 283lb.-ft. @ 3600

Transmission 5-speed manual with overdrive
Steering 4 wheel (rear is hydraulically controlled)

No, they weighed nearly 3,500lbs. it! Based on his name (DiscerningZ32), I'd say he knows a bit about Z32 series 300ZXs

the first site said 32xx, so its about the same as a 4th gen... i could see how it would be a close race.

I don't care what the "first site" says, 300ZX twin turbos did not weigh 3,2xx lbs.

Mine weighed 356Xlbs when I corner balanced it with me in it and I had ripped out a bit of the interior (not too much though)...

The weight really killed the car for me though. Its fairly short wheelbase and overall small dimensions made its weight really noticable around corners. They do make a lot of really light weight parts for the car and completely removing the Hicas system (not just blocking off the lines) will take off some serious weight but it's difficult and time consuming.

Always liked the Z32's...especially the TT models...hell, if I could have found a clean one, I would probably be driving that instead of the TA...

Nice kill OP, the one thing with factory boosted cars is that they can be dangerous if you don't know it.

3287lbs is about what a NA Z32 300ZX weighs, the 300ZX TTs are about 3480lbs. Stock i'd say they are between LT1 and LS1 speeds.

There are some trick looking z32's around here and I personally witnessed a(claimed) Z31 w/ a supra motor/turbo rape a hellion turbo'd terminator.

I ran the Z31/supra motor nissan from a 30 roll. I jumped two cars and he came whizzing past me at about 50 mph like I was sitting stilll, all the while sounding like an enraged chainsaw lol with his asian buddy videotaping the occurence. haha.

Thats marks 86 300ZX....makes a little over 700WHP on pump gas and about 850WHP~ on race gas all while weighing in at about 2600lbs. He has one of the fastest street driven cars in central texas....should easily be a 155MPH+ trapper.

Heres a video of that Z vs. the 600WHP hellion Cobra:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7aXc--3Dsg4
^That was on his old setup. You can hear in the video he continues to turn the boost down and eventually just turns the boost controller off to try and make it a closer race lol.

And yeah theres also a handful of Z32s between San Antonio and Austin making upwards of 600+HP...
