How about let the damn computer do its job and shift/downshift itself. Sounds like a grand idea to me.
Don't just go out and kick it on the 3rd honk, manuals (like I'm sure the 370 was) will ALWAYS get 1/2-1 full car jump on you if you do this. Practice a bit but on normal honks you should kick it RIGHT after the 2nd honk. Your car will downshift and leave almost exactly on the 3rd honk. Same goes for the track, leave on the second light.

Up here 350 and 370's are ricers: my definition is, any car that, 50% of the time or more, is lowered with bling rims and body kits or big aluminum wings, or both: that's a ricer car. Might as well be a Prelude. Nice cars no doubt, but when the majority of owners fall into the ricer category... Well, you know what they say about rednecks and camaro's, right? Same thing.
hahahhaha just razzin you guys. 370Z's definitely fit into the Fast n Furious crowd image, but you can't damn them all for what some of there owners do.

It's not "bad" to do it, but if you try to manually shift a stock transmission for an entire race the computer can do it better 99/100 times. Having the car in the correct gear at the beginning of the race doesn't do anything bad.

After much practice, trial and error style I have my own set of racing standards:
0-20mph: always manually hold it and shift 200-300rpms before redline: if its in drive and spins-then-shifts you are done for.
20-30mph: Let it auto shift... 1st gear is the nemesis of 4L65E cars. Dont hold it, it spins and shifts. Do hold it, and you risk over revving and/or damaging your bands due to lack of line pressure that causes it to occasionally slip horribly when you slide it up to 2nd. Never try and start a race at 30mph while holding 1st. Bad things happen nearly every time.
30-40mph: Simple. NEVER START A RACE THERE unless you got a 3800+ stall. It's a guaranteed 2+ lead you will hand them.
40-75mph: manually hold it until you take off, then immediately slide it to drive. With my 3.45 gears, it will not downshift to 2nd after 70mph- but 2nd will run up to 80+mph. It's another 1-2 car lead you will give them if it doesnt downshift when it "should".

A platform of cars are not rice, it is the owners of those cars that make them rice. I have seen some of the riced out cars you can imagine only to counter that with a very clean well done and tasteful same exact make/model car.
Owners are ricers, platforms are not.
On a side note- 95% of 350/370s I see are one stock and drove by male adults over the age of 40.
If you absolutely have to have it in 1st or 2nd at the beginning of the race, immediately shift it into OD when you kick it.
NOBODY can out shift a computer, period. There is a reason they call them AUTOmatics.
Correct way, put it in OD and go on the second honk. Or get a converter.

Lemons: I don't know about 4L60 cars, but my 4L65E in my GTO will shift to second when I put the selector to second gear, regardless of where the rpms are at. Only 2nd to drive and drive to overdrive will it run it out to the redline. Makes it a PITA honestly.

That is why I say put it in OD and let the computer do the work.

your most likely more of a ricer than the 370z driver.
and sticks_n_stones... ricer is more mentality than anything else. sad thing is the 370z forum all around has less drama in it than here. since there actually is less kids driving around 370z's than ls1/lt1 or other cheap older v8's. from all the Z owners i know personally about 15. none of us has body kits or ugly 20+ inch chrome rims that dont match the car. but i know mustangs with wings that look like there off WRX sti's and a camaro painted bright green lowered with the fugliest rims you can imagine.

Other than that I don't have any complaints with that community.

The only negative thing I can really think of about the 350Z forums is they always resort to the same ole same ole..... "O yea, well your interior looks like **** compared to ours!" and "But our cars carry a completely different "status" with them"... I mean seriously, it is a Nissan.
Other than that I don't have any complaints with that community.

What I always did was punch it for a second so the computer puts it in the right gear and I hold it in that gear with the shifter. Then I get ready to race.
That way you don't have to wait for it to kick down and you won't kill your tranny. Once you start to go at it, just click it back into drive, don't bother shifting for each gear, the computer does it all.

I can only imagine how they get if they are maxed out with bolt ons and a stock 370z walks all over them
