Default camera Setups

What are you guys using to get those awesome videos at night? I know most of us just have some cheap point and shoots that suffice but Im looking for a little more. I have a couple cameras that take good shots in the daylight but fail at night.

My friend has a Kodak playsport which is super nice and its only $90 new on ebay, but Id like to see some more.

No way is a Go Pro good for night vids IMO. I have a GoPro HD. Night quality is mediocre at best.

I have a canon SX20is for quick shots and messin around. You can tinker with it a little bit, but not as much as a DSLR.
The Fujifilm HS10 is a lot like that, only better. Sure wish I had bought that, but I couldn't put one in my hands, there aren't any around here in stores.

As with any camera other than most DSLR's, low light shots are going to suck. I've heard some CMOS point and shoots can overcome this though.

I put it on my beater to make a vid for a similar thread.

This was before the firmware upgrade which is supposed to improve night quality, but i haven't used it at night since.

I've used a couple different things, haven't got a good night video with the GoPro though. I'll add that later. In every video, it was pitch black outside and no other lights besides our cars and the camera. It may look like it at certain points, but that's the cameras picking up lighting wayyyy off in the distance.

My friend's iPhone4 with the light on, 1 in car and 1 @ distance: (light on = 720p option)

Cobra kid's iPhone4 with the light off for comparison: (no light = no HD)

Friend's normal digital camera, 1 in car and 1 @ distance:

Friend's $90 camcorder from Best Buy (sound is easily destroyed by anything not stock):

Quality and framerate look good. Anything else you would want to change (contrast, brightness, sharpness) can be adjusted via the computer with a program like premiere. But like you said this was before the firmware update.

camera's the easy part. getting it set up and pointed/securely mounted for a race you wernt expecting is the hard part.

Haveing lots of time to set it up for a pre planned race with friends is the easy part. getting the friends to actually show up is the hard part.

I keep a 720 HD flip camera mounted to my vipers windshield at all times. I couldnt tell you how good the day or night picture is ect.

What I can tell you is that its small and light and easily mounted and you push one button to turn it on and then a dime sized button to record.

A more complicated camera despite the picture quality,,,I simply wouldnt have enough time to awnswer the challangers rev and slow down while trying to set up the system. And be ready to race.

easier is better

Fastest car I've been driving around is in the 15s. [Bone stock Regal GS] The one I will likely be buying is in the 16s or 17s though.

I'm about to buy an '11 Fiesta or Elantra as a long term DD/ winter beater.

Motor trend for the Fiesta = 17.0 @ 81, the Elantra = 16.8 @ 83

Not spending $500/month on gas will be nice though.

Back from the dead; I picked up an Olympus ME-51S for my Gopro and it seems to be working well. It needs a good wind sock though.
