Supra is a great car for early 90s technology
Unfortunetly the Supra is a great car for early 90s technology
I did some major research on this car to try and find out why people still like it?????
First off I observed a huge car meet with 125 cars. Their were two domestics. My viper and a camaro. Their was one supra and 3 s2ks and 119 13-17 second import ricers.
At this moment it dawned on me that amongst this car meet the supra was God. As well I had never seen more than 30 domestics meet.
Then I realized that this supra was likely a 400 rwhp bpu capable of 12.5 at 118 mph. Amongst this crowd of 119 rice burners it was again Godly. Then price factored in as to how this worship ever happenned. Brand new supra 35-42k brand new. 119 imports 9-25k brand new.
Now when you go to a domestic car meet the weakest cars are 400 rwhp cammed fbodies or supercarged 2 valves. Its very common to see 400-500 rwhp h/c builds/nos/fi. Base ls3 c6s or cobras can hit 500 rwhp with ease.
So when the 80-115k z06s, vipers and zr1s roll in with their 450-550 stock rwhp it dosent have nearly the effect as the supra at its car meet. As their will be a handful of cars outta that 30 who can smash them all...
So its easy to see why the lower level import owning minions worship the supra but what about the others?
Back in the early 90s the 12.6 second viper and 12.9 second zr1 at their 60k entry price were the cars to beat. Along came the supra with its 35k entry and 13.6 second quarter mile it came much closer than many other cars.
But whats this? BASIC PERFORMANCE UPGRADES took the supra from a 290 rwhp 13.6 at 105 mph car to a 400 rwhp 12.5 at 118 mph car. Dusting the viper and zr1.
Fast forward to the 1996 dodge viper with its stock 410 rwhp and 120 mph trapps. The BPU supra while not quite enough to win gave the 70k viper a very close run. The 97 vette was a joke and the supra didnt even need BPU to match its speed.
Then in 2001 chevy upped its game and revield the c5z06. 12.4 at 116 mph at 55k was a bargain. But even it fell to the mighty bpu supra.
2003 the viper came out redesighned and trapped 123 mph. At 83k it wasnt cheap. But finally america offered a car that could easily dust the BPU supra. But it was a solid ten year run of the sura with just the most basic of mods takeing names and numbers.
so after understanding the culture and *** kicking history of the supraI do understand its appeal
With that said as huge of a Mike Tyson fan as I am Lennox Lewis ended that legacy a long time ago. The Supra surprised the world for nearly ten years. But nowadays a BPU supra will get obliterated by the 03 viper, 06 z06. It needs a big turbo to hang. As far as the 08 viper and 09 zr1. It takes a serious build to knock down these 130 plus mph titans.
We all joke around how a 500-700 rwhp supra will runs high 11s or 12s. Just remember that back in the 90s that was fast. Very very fast.

Maybe you should tell the ones on here I beat. Big stalled cammed LS1 and full bolt on WS6 with weight reduction. Guess they stock. I knwo a few in my area that should beat me with me being N/A. But haven't had chance to run them.
This is the problem i have with "I beat a cammed LS car" not all cammed cars run the same size cam or are they the best cam for the supporting mods that they are running..Personally i think anyone who picks an of the shelf cam are leaving power on the table..

I'd rather have a ZR1 over my Z06 lol, but I'd take my Z06 over a GTR
BUt yes not all cammed cars will run the same. Nor will every bolt on car. Case in point I got beat at the tarck by my buddies 5.0. He has less mods then me. ALL he had was tune stall gears and tires. I had tune/gears/cold air/off road x pipe. His 11.3 to my 11.80 that night. And the best my car ran still hasn't beat him.
He now has a Boss 302 in his. Swapped the 5.0 for the Boss engine. Bigger stall. Headers back exhaust.

Match up 10 pairs of stock GT-R's and ZR1's (just 10 average owners) at the dragstrip and the GT-R is going to win the majority of those 10 races.
Extend the race out to 1/2 mile or a mile and it's ZR1 all the way, but not in the 1/4.
I've seen probably 7-8 different ZR1's at the track and have only seen 1 guy get into the 10's (and just barely).

The original debate was about which car is faster, not on average but overall. ZR1>GTR in the 1/4 mile. It's been proven!
Look man.... The lsx camaros have been eating mustangs since the beginning of time.
1997 when the ls1 vettes came out was a long time ago. In my ls1 vette ornsx or vipers I have raced numerous mustangs. But I like many here didnt even bother to write a story. No one would care its just a mustzng unless it was the cobra.
Fast forwrd through 13 years of the lsx engines stock for stock destroying mustangs and FINALLY FORD BUILDS YOU GUYS A DECENT MUSTANG!
Kool im happy for you. Many of you jumped ship to lsxs or imports but the few sad souls that remained were given a treat.
Now be a lil more humble. Just cause you beat a 98 camaro with an intake and mild cam at 340 rwhp dosent make you fast.
Chill out a lil man and have fun. Id treat any of you like btothers if we actually met some where

For me its......
08 viper
Fgt
03 viper
06 z06
09 zr1
I like the z06 much more than the zr1. Lighter and larger na engine running a 7.22 at the ring vs the zr1s 7.19 means its close enough to me to side with the z06

And I dont think you want to hear my opinion on a Ford GT lol
i prefer the ZR1 since its cheaper to mod since its S/C'd, Vipers are cool I love them but I prefer a LSx motor over them since they are cheaper to mod plus alot better selection of good tuners/performance shops.
