85 was the worst year for putting a mustang against a camaro. stangs were still carbed while 85 was the first year for the TPI in the camaro. The 85 305 TPI was the "freak" year since it had a larger factory cam than any other year so they made 10-15 more HP than later years on average. Gotta compare top dog to top dog...none of this FI 5.0 vs carbed or TBI 305 nonsense!

LOL, carbd 85 Camaro was my first car. I think it was rated at 155hp and 245ftlbs. The valves would float at ~5000rpm and I still can remember thinking how cool I thought it was that I could do a whole 20ft one wheelie peelie. It handled well though.

No surprises in this vid. I keep tellin you guys those old 5.slows weren't that fast w/o mods.
Nightmare ....85 tpi cars actually had 20HP more than the 86's.

For some reason, everyone and thier mother thinks foxbody 5.0's were out of the league of a 3rd gen. Any 305 TPI/5 speed or 350 TPI car would be a drivers race for a 5.0. 350 TPI's could run 13's with a few bolt ons and a good tire.

Back when I first started roadracing it was the tpi cars vs the fox 5.0. On a road course the tpi cars flat owned the foxes...... I can't really stress how bad it was. It's a shame so many only want to look at 1 aspect of performance. I would love to do a race from 100-0.....or 0-100-0. Getting a car to to only go a 1/4 all out is pretty easy if that's your only goal.

the '85 tpi 305 was rated at 215 hp in the camaro & 205 in the firebird...yes the '86's sucked big time , what with the third brake light sitting on top of the hatch and losing between 10-15 hp. in '85 you could only get a tpi with an auto. want a 5-speed ???...fine then you would get the 5.0 H.O. with either trans...basically the '85 tpi was a L-69 H.O with tpi...certainly got rid of the vapor lock that the H.O.'s were saddled with...there was a bigger difference between the auto. 305 and the manuel 305 engine wise...the runners were different and the manuel had a much better cam, better gears...the 5.7 which de-buted in '87 f-bodies was a 350 but just not the same 350 in the 'vette...different heads, runners were from the 305, cam...basically only the block was from the 'vette's..
i guess i'm old as i found out all this crap the hard way, see i bought all these cars i mentioned and found out how GM lied about it being the ''thee'' corvette engine...i also owned a '85 mustang gt 5-speed with the optional 3.08 gears...i never lost to any stock '84-'86 camaro or firebird...NIGHTMARE TA you're so right about the tbi 305's...man what a dog...170hp ..i sold cars for years and pontiac's and chevys and drove the tpi, great handling, but that was it....could not even spin the tires.

Actually the runners were the same on 305s and 350TPIs. The injectors were different however.
I "think" the 350 L98s from Vettes were 4 bolt blocks and the Fbodies were not-I could be wrong on that.
Some 350TPI cars were dogs too. Single cat 87-88s with 277 gears were terrible!!

let me correct myself here...the TBI couldn't spin the tires, the tpi could...and working with all the GM tech's i was told that the runners were different, and that the 350's had gotten the runners from the 305, not the corvette 350...sorry if this doesn't sound correct to you guys, but facts are facts...both my '87 & '91 formula 350's had the WS-6 suspension and 3.27 gears...not 3.23...i still have the invoice's somewhere...and when we took apart the engines is when we found out the many differences between the f-bodies and the 'vette...
my '87 had a open exhaust, no cat (gutted) 160* stat hypertech stage 3 chip, cai and computer tuning done as well...and lots of free stuff...ran a 'vette same year...dead even both cars with passengers...so much for my car having the real vette engine...and yes both my cars had 2 bolt mains...sadly....and MIKE MORRIS you're right, some tpi's were dogs, but my '91 was very stout.

Your facts concerning the runners are dead wrong. They are the same. Differences were in the years-some had cold start injector. Most Fbody runners got dinged up during install of the engine in the car. The Vettes didn't.
91 TPIs non automatic 305s were decent for the day.

304 horsepower vs 180 horsepower (when new 27 years ago). It should have been a lot worse. Back around 92 I would sometimes use my moms 90 Grand Prix to drive to college. A buddy of mine had a 91 IROC with a 305 tbi. We would race almost every time I drove it. We would go from a high roll and I would pull him everytime. The GP had a 3.1 v6 and I had a passenger.
