Default Raced A 350Z it surprised me

I have a stock Z28 with lid and flowmaster muffler and my best 1/4 mile time is a 13.26 at 107.29. Well I ran a 350Z at the track about 3 times and i beat him pretty bad everytime. His best time was a 14.05 at 101. Okay, after the track closed on my way home i see the same 350Z on the highway. He pulls beside me and just smacks it, we were going about 80 at first. So, I down shift into 4th gear and thinking I'm just going to fly by him because i beat him so bad at the track. I did not pass him until i reached 130mph. I was surprised it was that fast. From 80-120 he seemed just as fast as i was. Well, anyway i won but just took some time.

Sounds like he got the jump out on you, though. I would imagine you were somewhat caught off gaurd and not in the powerband as much as you would have liked. There-feel better?

Nice kill. Was this the same guy that you did the 1/4 with?

Do you have gears? If not you should have been in 3rd at 80mph.

I think the only reason you had any trouble is because he got the jump on you. If you two would have gone at the same time you would have started walking sooner. Probably right from the get go.

I have the stock 3.42's. You are probably right, i should have went to 3rd. I just did not think i would have to wine my car out like that to beat him.

ive been pulled on by a high 14 second vw hatchback from a roll because he had a running start and i wasnt able to get down to 2nd gear (70mph). unless you line up and time it together, roll racing doesnt show you much, especially if the cars are similar in performance.

Yeah you were in the wrong gear, with stock 3.42's at 5800rpms in 2nd you would be at about 78mph, so at 80 you should have pulled 3rd gear. If you have pulled 3rd gear I guarantee it would have been a different story. It would have been over a lot quicker.

He got the jump (time), you had to shift (some more time), then you put it in the wrong gear .... add them all up = fast 350z.

They are pretty quick up top. I raced a G35 from a 70 roll, but I went to third gear. I pulled him pretty good up to around 100 but from there to 120-something I could not pull farther ahead, but he did not gain on me either. He did a flyby at 130 + after I let off.

Just to beat a dead horse...Your pulling from the bottom of the power band (~3500 rpms) while the Nissan picked the right gear and was in its sweet spot. I've experienced the same but running against a several G35s instead. My car consistantly traps traps in the 108 range, yet when I have run several the Nissans from 80 on up it was bumper to bumper. At 80 mph in 3rd my car is down about 120rwhp from what its making in the 5-6K range...Like the other guy said drop it into 3rd next time (you'll be up about 100rwhp). My Z is a 98 auto with 86K miles, stock converter, and 3:23 rear.

well everyone has stated the correct answers to your prob....

just get a better gear selection next time, and you will be good to go.

BTW: hack off that Flowmaster and get a better cat back, that thing is choking your car right now!
