Default 2001 Cobra vs 2000 LS1

My girlfriend has a brother, same age as me, maybe a year younger (just turned 20, so not horribly old), and he has an 01 Cobra with 19's on it, street tires, etc. Bone stock except exhaust. Now, I could do a Google search, but those cars didn't make 425hp until 03-04, correct? Because he swore up and down it was a 450hp factory freak. Now, me being the guest at their house, and me always trying to be modest when talking to people about cars in person (I really don't get any enjoyment out of bragging... Line up or shut up, seriously.) didn't want to even hint at my Camaro maybe being able to outrun it. Sig doesn't say it, but my car has exhaust on it too. Anyway, HE brought it up, telling me how badly his Cobra would smack LS1 cars around. Now, I'm not a die-hard anti-Cobra guy, hell, I'd own an 03-04 just because those cars are pretty cool. But, Chevy guy by nature...

Anyway, after about 45 minutes of me saying "No man, I believe you, it's fast," or "Dude let's just race some other time, my drag radials are aired up too much," basically any excuse I could think of to not have to go burn gas. I was dead set on just sitting on the couch and watching TV with the lady.

So, there we were 5 minutes later outside down the street from his house, a 2-lane road, it's 11 PM, no one around, and I ask how he wants to do it. He pulls up to the line, I'm way back, I do a little burnout past him, back up on my tracks. Now it's obvious this kid has never been to a track or anything, because him and all of his buddies thought I was just "showing off". Right, so anyway, his friend does the arm drop, I launch my car at 3000-3500, don't really remember, didn't spin TOO bad, but he dumped his clutch and I outran him by who knows how many lengths.

So we go again, he does a burnout, launches a little less hard, I launch about the same, I spin for maybe 10 feet, which is really ideal I think, because it puts me right in the power. And I drag him by about 2-3 lengths. In front of my girlfriend, their dad, all 3 of his friends, and his girlfriend. (Who by the way, were all in their dad's Escalade, there's no way in hell I'd ever race with someone else in my car.)

So he talks me into one more race on the way back to the house, and I tell him "Yea, just honk 3 times, you know." So we do it, and it was probably all gearing on my part, but from about a 45mph roll I downshift and give it some into 2nd, and pull away from him pretty hard. And went back to watching movies.

So now, I'm sure he's on Craigslist or something looking for an LS1 car. Haha.

Very nice kill sir!

Those Cobra's with a few bolt-ons and an excellent driver will go low 12s/high 11s. BTW - the 03*04 Cobras were supercharged and caem with a factory rating of like 390 but made closer to that at the tire (way under rated). The 01 you are talking about came with I think 305.

Yea, I really don't know a whole lot about them. They're cool cars for sure though. Figured with maybe a better driver and a good tire it'd give me a run for my money.

I hate those types of people, make the rest of us mustang guys look even worse lol. My gf's cousin was basically the same way, he had a newer tiburon and thought it was wayyy faster than my car. His reasoning was that motortrend or something showed the genesis beating the new v6 mustang, and thus he thought his other hyundai could beat any mustang lol. He's lucky it was winter and the car was tucked away or he would have been embarassed like you did to that guy.

Good race tho, I'm actually surprised he could stay 2-3 lengths behind you, as I'm assuming he knows just about nothing about how to have a driver mod.

After I knew I had him I short shifted and let off a little, 2-3 at the end. I probably coulda worked my car harder and had him by more, but being the way things were I didn't really have to beat on my car to put away the win.

Oh, they make 1st gear useless without a good tire, but the car is an absolute blast with them. Mine hasn't been re-calibrated for them yet, but that's the little things haha. It scares the hell out of me though because every time I launch it I have my fingers crossed hoping I'm not gonna break teeth off of the ring and pinion.

I have radials. I'm an a4 with a tight converter so it needs gears. If it was an m6 I'd throw up in. I've been almost 1.5's on my stock 10 bolt so have at it haha.

My Monte Carlo has a stout rearend so I'm no stranger to hard launches on slicks, but I've read a LOT of horror stories about the 10 bolt in these cars. Haha. I'm sure I'll get ambitious and really let the car have it with a sticky tire some day. How hard do you launch it to grab a 1.5?

I've ran 4.56's in the last couple cars I've built. It's honestly just my go-to gear ratio. I was worried about doing 3.73's or 4.10's and then having that "Oh but I could have gone with 4.56's..." feel.

That was when it had the converter and a 70 shot. I ran 28" tires so it slowed up after the converter on motor haha.

Ah, I see. Yea, I'm hoping with a good tire and a shot my car could net something like a 1.7, 1.8. I'd be content with that. I've only owned it since April, and I have literally no idea how it'd do at the track.
