I think that is more matter of opinion and who you ask. I actually like the new body style... little more aggressive, but you cant argue that the early body style isnt a good bang for the buck with the price falling like it has.

Interior of the newer car is way better too. But you can get the older car in decent shape for under 20 now. Find an auto one and slap a blower on it with tires, tune and exhaust. Low 11s to mid 10s depending on weight and blower.... and its reliable.

They do share very similar body lines. But when it comes to the top line models the ZL1 definitely comes out on top over the GT350.

I absolutely guarantee you that no Non-gutted tin can S197 mod for mod to my Non-gutted S550 would have beat it. My S550 ran what it ran at 3820lbs race weight.

Pretty well known stock for stock the s197 has the edge due to weight but after mods the s550 has the advantage.
I suppose if we want to compare tin can cars to full weight cars we can though.

Tires mostly. The goodyears they put on them was junk. Hell the old irocs could put up better skidpad numbers.
But we're talking chassis's here. The feel of a s197 is **** compared to a s550. In a s197 you feel like you're riding on top of the car. It never feels like it wants to hunker down and grip. A s550 does. My Camaro did....but it had a slp suspension. A regular ss or z28 lacks damping for comfort.

I will admit, s197 just liked to spin around the corners and never felt fully planted. Predictable but never fully planted.
