Default What was he thinkin'

Ok. First I'm new to this LS1 engine stuff, (last muscle car was a '71 "Built" Chevelle no computer stuff) I bought my Z last September (brand new) and did'nt get to drive it much before puttin 'er away for the winter.

Anyhow that being said I'm going on I-75 a couple of weeks ago and had not had a chance to race ANYTHING since I bought this. (Not much in the way of activity in my home town of 330 pop) Anyhow, I'm doing about 75 or so and I see this black thing boppin' in and out of traffic trying to get up to me. Low and behold a Black '02 GT goes blasting by like... "follow me I'll get us through the traffic so we can go!" So I follow and now were doing about 90 we line up and go...well I did. I just shook my head back and forth saying "Nope..not enough". So I slow down thinking it's only a GT and here he comes again this time we take off from about 100....same result. We did this a few times same result every time. So I start to back down and here he comes again but I can see a State Cop sitting in the median (Looking for southbound traffic Thank the lord!) So I'm shaking my head no again this time to let the guy know about the cop, while trying to slow mine down from about 125 at this point without doing a very noticeable nose dive. At the last minute he finally saw cop and got over behind me (Where all 'Stangs belong IMO). We were pretty much done after that. He was at least big enough to nod and give the thumbs up before he got off at his exit.

Not the greatest story but hey... we all have to start somewhere right?

Uhh, nice kill...I guess? Haven't had the pleasure of racing a GT yet, but am looking forward to it. Sucks that there's no comp in your town.

Yeah... I guess it was a kill but he kept coming back and wanting to go from higher speeds?? I didn't have the heart to tell him that I have 2:73 gears so... ya know I could do this all day. When we happened along the cop I guess it was a lot funnier to be there. Being the first time I've run someone and thinking in my head ...Who the hell can I sell this to when I get a ticket and can no longer afford the insurance?? I promise I'll have a better story next time as I will be driving my Z to the Big City next week! DETROIT

Sounds like fun. Glad you didn't get a ticket.

And I love how the 4th gen feels at 100 mph because it is still so sure footed

I bet the difference between your Z and the 71' Chevelle was noticable as far as handling at 100+. At least my 70' Grand Prix (455 was fun) had terrible handling at 100+ mph.

Beware. There are some GT's with sneaky components that will walk you like nobody's business. I have a buddy with a street 10 sec. GT. You might beat alot of them but always be suspicious. Nonetheless, good kill

You must be an old ****,like me! I had a 71 340 Demon,4-spd,3.55 posi. I got it when I came back from Nam in Feb 71. Used to drive it fast all the time...usually 75 to 120+...topped-out at 132(5,700 rpm). Some of us used to race on a road that went to Tombstone,Az...had a marked quarter mile...saw a 327 box Nova flip at about 95 or so...guy was ok...no belt...popped the glass on first hit and sent him out...someone took him to the hosp on Ft Huachuca. Those were the days.

Eh..older than some but not quite that old. However when you grow up in a town like Flint, MI SB Chevy (hell any GM) parts were a dime a dozen. Plus nothing to do but Drink, Fight, F**k and Race. Not nescasarily in that order.
I do remember one night back in Flint racing a '57 Chevy who couldn't drive to save his ***. (Me thinks maybe a little too much... We raced up a road that was sorta winding and after I walked him a few times I let off only for him to go swaying by and running me off the road. (Not on purpose...again Me thinks maybe a little too much... but nonetheless it caused me to lock 'em up. And with the GREAT handling of the '71 I spun, bounced across the median of this divided highway, took out a sign, creased my passenger door and rocker panel ended up facing west on the other side of the highway. (we were going east) Yeah...not so much the good ole' days for me!

Sorry for the sh*t(guess we're supposed to put it like that instead of completely literal). My Demon actually felt pretty good at high speeds, even the 132 top-end max-out. Of course,it was new then, too. Now,my mother's 66 Monterey,390 (2 bbl, about 265hp) was all over the road at its top end of 117mph.
Your story about the 57 reminded me of being passed on a 2 lane road(hilly and kind of twisty) by a 67(I think) Mustang,289 4-spd. I was thinking it was a stupid place to pass when I see him go out of control and go off the road and hit a rock big enough to break a tie rod sleeve. That's pretty much what happened to his car...and I remember him looking around for his small water pipe which he found on the passenger floor.
Yeah,I'm an older **** but the bug never leaves you.
