wat year gtp
Hey guys I recently sold the formula that i got for 900 for 3000 and i am looking on putting some cash into a gtp model grand prix. I have a few questions for anyone that knows about them What is the best year model to get speed wise, I also heard the blowers were different on everysingle year model is this true. Wat kinda times should i see with headers catback, smaller pulley like a 2.8 and a intercooler. thanx

the newer body style gtp's push out 260hp and i think 280tq. The late 90's made 240/240. I personally would go for a 98 GTP because of the performance shift option. Any year GTP will net you mid 14 runs i believe. I do not know if any year is better than another.

Yep, from what I've read, 97 is no TC with the GTP. 98 gets TC, but you can't turn it off. 99 you can turn it off.
Damillio, is your dad's a GTP or just a GT? I think that would therein lie the answer to the TC question.
As was mentioned, you get the tranny select mode thingy in 98 too.

As a former GTP [ GTX ] owner, here's my take:
1 - Try to stay away from a 97 or 98 and here's why:
a) 97s were the first year of L67s [aka 3.8L Series II M90 Eaton S/C'd V6 ] so the bugs weren't *fixed* yet...and have a diff PCM code. Coolant Reservoir Bottle location is a PITA when modifying.
b) 98s had most of the bugs fixed. However, for some odd reason, their heads were prone to cracking Also, the coolant reservoir bottle was relocated starting this year.
2 - Buy either 99s or '00s. Ofcourse this does not imply the 01s and newer are any less performance wise. But, 99-00 GTPs seem to respond better to mods, in general. Also, starting in 01, the "Performance Shift" button on the gear shifter was knocked out You'd have to wire it up into the PCM to enable this function. The "Perf. Shift" is required to optimize Re-Programmed PCM gains.
3 - You can't turn off TCS simply by pressing the TCS off button. The PCM will still kick in and engage it on as it senses slippage/low traction. The ONLY way to disable TCS is to pull the fuse!
4 - On model years 97 thru 03, the blowers are exactly the same i.e. Roots Style Eaton M90 Gen IV Blower. The 04s get the Gen V M90.
5 - My bone stock '99 GTX [ GTX - SLP's version of the GTP. Rated at 260hp/280tq, came with functional R/A Hood, Cold Air Induction, Exhaust] pulled a 14.47@98.xx at E-Town with a 2.1 60'
With a 3.4" Pulley [stock is 3.8"], 180* Thermostat, Reprogrammed PCM, 3" Downpipe, and NGK TR55 spark plugs, it came down to a 13.71@100.xx with 2.2 60'
Added 1.9 Rockers, switched to a better re-programmed PCM [DHP, previous one was GrandPrix Store PCM], Autolite 104s [GTPs do not like NGKs!], 160* Thermo, Custom Exhaust, 3.25" S/C pulley, Air/Fuel Calibrator [aka AFC] version 1.0, MSP Fan Control Module and pulled a 13.30@103 at E-Town on 17" SLP Chrome 'GTX' Rims aka HEAVY! lol..
GTP's aftermarket has come a LONG way and they're really fun cars!! [unless your def of a fun car is only RWD, Stick, V8 and 2 door]
There's cams, heads, forged blocks, upgraded Blowers [ MP112s ], Intercoolers, headers, trannys, et all out now that make this lil V6 family sedan somewhat of a monster!
With Headers, Catback and I/C, I'm not sure you can run a 2.8" w/o KR.. a 3.0" might be a safer bet I wouldn't even bother with a Catback, because the stock exhaust flows pretty well on these cars..
The transmission is perhaps the weakest link on GTPs. With a simple pulley swap from 3.8" [stock] to 3.4" you'll be pushing the TQ upwards of 300lbs..
I'd do Headers, IC, cam, heads, and smaller pulley. Check out www.clubgp.com/forum for more and new mods!

Finally, def. get one with a HUD [Heads Up Display]

Launching!
You can get a GTP in the 12's for not alot of money, just need a cam, headers, 2.9" pulley, intercooler, exhaust and intake and you're there. I ran 8.85@81 with my mildly modded GTP and that was before headers. The weak link is the transmission if you drag race on sticky tires. Sticky tires + alot of torque = destroyed differential. Check out www.clubgp.com for some good info and the below aftermarket suppliers:

Otherwise, how in the world could you roast the tires so good?
Hook up an Auto-Tap or Scan-Master, turn TCS off using the *button* and make a run Vs Pulling the TCS Fuse. You will notice the PCM retards the timing when only the button is depressed and the fuse is intact
Also, since the stock tranny has no LSD, doing one wheel tire roasting = bye bye differential!..

2 of my friends have them 1 of thems a 98.. and yes you can turn the traction off. ones an 03.. the 03 is a little quicker but i'd rather have the 98 save some money on purchase and dump it into mods.. it don't take much to get those cars into the 12's
