Most people I see driving Mustangs (and Camaros) just don't get anywhere near the cars potential at the dragstrip. Manual or autos... They just don't learn how to launch, for the most part. And spinning tires LOOKS great! It just doesn't win drag races.

Is this '02 GT a 5-speed? I know of a local '01 GT Auto that ran a 14.2 @98 with the only mod being removed mufflers. If an auto stang can pull that with nothing more than muffler delete, a stock 5-speed with a good driver should be able to break the 13s no problem.

I ran a 13.9 with my GT and all I had done was I swaped the stock muffler with Magnaflow 2 1/4 My Trap was 102 if I remember right. That was with wheel spin and I barely learned to drive a stick a month before. I can launch off my stock bald tires now and pin me in the seat I think I could have wideld that down to a 13.8 or maybe even a 13.7 if I let some air out. Ohh I had a K&N also, still had the air silencer on though. I ran a 13.43 with my G-tec after I learned to launch, but I'm sure that is extremely optimistic.
I beat quite a few trans ams and SS when I was close to stock (LT1's and LS1's) The guys in this area can't launch worth crap, too much power for them to handle. I got them all hyped up to reving my engine then they reved theirs and when the light hit and they dumped the clutch the tires just burned up in smoke, and my feather action sent may 3-4 car lengths ahead. WE shut down before they could catch up.
As long as you get a good launch he won't get you. Good luck and post the video!

My cousin had a stock 87 GT that ran 13.5 every run back to back. That was leaving the line off idle too. I know of plenty of 87-93 mustangs running 13's stock. The formula 350 was the only car around here that had a chance street racing. Until 93 when the LT1's came out we did get our ***'s handed to us by the mustangs. Dont forget a stock 87-93 mustang only dyno's 180-200 RWHP my stock 98 T/A dynoed 302 rwhp and I think the stock 02 has been dynoing in the 220rw range. There is no doubt the T/A should win the race but if the guy driving the T/A is a schiliter then the mustang will win.

I am not saying its impossible for a stock 5.0 to run 13.5 but I have NEVER seen it. It probably could be done with a violent launch and some GOOS tires. I don't believe it was done launching off idle. Also I don't think I have ever seen a STOCK 5.0 Do they actually exist??????? Either way, two of my club members have newer GTs. One is a 1999 GT 5 speed, and the other is a 2000 GT 5 speed. The quickest either of them have run was 13.7 and that was with Hooker mufflers, O/R pipe, and shifter as mods. They both have nitrous now and run 12.40s. I have seen stock Ls1s break into the 12s(12.8-12.9). My 2000 Ws6 M6 went 13.1@108 with only a cutout, hood baffles removed and SPEC stage 3 carbon clutch, also on a 2.0 60ft(no track prep). I don't forsee a stock 02 GT beat a stock 02 WS6. On the street, sure its a possiblity because anything can happen on the street, but to equal drivers with equal tires, the WS6 will win everytime. Just simple math, 220ish RWHP vx 290-320ish RWHP. The only edge the Stang has is its lower geared trans. It may jump out ahead in 1st but after that its over.

With equal drivers, an 02 LS1 will destroy an 02 GT...period. No ifs, ands, or buts. You lost, the car didn't.

when my car was bone stock, I raced a 5-sp 02 GT @ RT66 raceway with my buddy in the car. The stang didn't lose, he got WALKED. To make it close I probably would have had to give him 2-4 lengths from a dig on the street, and I'd probably still be confident...

Kid w/ TA: Practice, practice, practice! Launch the car at 1500 RPM, put your foot on the floor, shift at 5500 (so if you miss a shift it won't go too far over 6000rpm), put your foot on the floor, shift at 5500, stand on it again- now you WIN.

i just thought i'd add my .02 since i own a 2002 mustang GT (for sale BTW )

to me its basically a POS i wish i had never bought. there is no way this should realistically be considered challenging to the TA. But have fun none the less.
