Default What is it with people and roll racing????

Having read lots and lots of threads about races there seems to be two conclusions to every one.

1. slower car vs faster one from a DIG

slower car wins, so everyone waves the BS flag claiming that if they did infact win it was only the driver they beat.

2. racing from a ROLL

is claimed to be gay and pointless as it requires less skill.

____________
So here's the dilemma. Roll racing will show which car is actually FASTER as it almost entirely eliminates the driver in the equation. Yet this appears not to be good enough for many people on here.

So lets say the same person then races from a dig and wins, they usually get abused because they only out drove the other vehicle.

SO WHAT IS A RACE?

Is it car vs car

or

driver vs driver

or both. As it doesn't seem to matter which was the major cause of the victory people always complain - why??

roll racing because you can'ty just stop in the middle of the highway and count to 3 to go...nor do you have time to go find a deserted straight road in the middle of nowhere.

and about the bs thing, some people have the ls1/god complex that no ls1 can loose.

i agree i like to race from a roll because lets face it a m6 lt1 with hard-*** BFgoodrich g-force KDWS's aren't the easiest thing to hook up from a dig. going from a roll takes the wheelspin factor out of the equation a lot more (not entirely) but it makes for a real good comparison between which car is faster than the other

Unless you have a manual or 4000 or higher stall with cam and heads the manual will always pull on roll racing

Any decent driver can bang gears but a good driver can launch on the street. The motor is not the whole car but is a major factor in roll racing (hp). I like using the suspension and motor together as one. I'd give more props to a car that can launch hard on the street/track than a car that traps high. If you throw enough money at any motor it can make power. But suspension takes alot of trial and error to get dialed in. -Mark

So, my old 306 mustang with 2800 stall and 76mm innovative will never win from a roll?
By the way: when they start doing rolls at the tracks....a lot more people will start accepting rolls.
Also: there's a local outlaw drag series here that runs 8.5" slicks....their record is like 5.70's in the 1/8th, and they all run 6.20s-5.90's consistently in competition....food for thought. If you cant hookup 12 & 13 sec. cars-thats

I prefer roll races right now b/c I am still trying to figure out how much power I have compared to "X" car.

As far as not hooking up a 12-13 second car, how many 12-13 second cars have the suspension setup of an outlaw drag car? Thats like saying NASCAR's can lap at 180+ mph but you losing control of your F-body at 120 in a corner is gay. Its a little different ballgame...

It is hard to stop in the middle of the road and do 2-3 races. I have seen many stop in the middle of a MAJOR INTERSTATE with cars a honking behind them before though. Many cars don't have strong rears or the suspension for good dig races.. If I was to do a dig race a try for a 60' below 2.00 sec I would be sitting on the side of the road waiting to be towed. Damn rear.. Dig is the best comparison of the driver skill, but roll racing still is a good comparison for the car's power and speed. Roll racing still does test driver skill as well though...

i agree.....to a certain point....i have rolled raced lots of times and guys miss a gear....its easy to do....but i roll race due to the fact that Ls1's have a pos rear end.....and until i get $2500 im stuck with roll racing....im not gonna sacrifice my car for one race

Almost all the races I've done are from a roll for a few simple reasons. To me racing isn't a job or very serious, its just for fun. I'm sure most people can agree with that. My vette was well over 500rwhp with a blower when I did most of my racing. I dont know how many people push power like that, but its not fun trying to launch that on street tires. I like using street tires because I don't feel like worrying if I might get caught in the rain. I like to drive anywhere anytime and not worry. My stock goodyears make good driving tires, but don't hook up. I don't feel like putting stickier tires on it either because I dont' feel like breaking things. I know plenty of people who don't make anywhere near as much power as I do yet their cars are always broken from launching hard. I'd rather be out racing from a roll then sitting in the garage fixing my rearend or transmission. Another reason is some people aren't close to a track. Not everyone wants to make a day out of racing someone. I also know people who race at the track, but once you get fast, you have to put a roll cage in it. I don't know about some of you, but I don't want a roll cage in my car. It's not a racecar, it doesn't need a rollcage. There are plenty of good reasons to do a little highway run from a roll to have some fun. Everyone knows that the only way to do a real competition is to go to the 1/4th mile track and run there. Thats the only fair way, but that doesn't mean its not fun to run on the street from a roll.

I race more from a dig than a roll, but mainly because of the lack of roads to do rolls on around me.

I could care less if it's from a roll or dig though, and I honestly can't understand why anyone WOULD care??? If two people agree to race a certain way, than there's no need to cry. It IS their race.

I think people take this street racing thing way too seriously. Its hard enough around here to find a good spot to run from a roll, or cars willing to run you. Not to mention keeping away from cops.

I'd rather go from a roll on the street simply becasue its a lot easier on your car, the street isn't exactly set up for optimum traction for a dig launch, and its just more convinient most of the time. Its nice to win a street race....but win or lose at the end of a race I'm usually more happy with the fact that no cops saw us, nobody hit anything, and the person behind me isn't calling in my plate.

There's another big factor no one's mentioned: Rubber spoor! When you find a good safe venue for a street race, the 'evidence' when going from a dig is like fresh deer tracks to a hunter. There's a perfect empty road (no houses, no late-open businesses) near my old office and about 6 years ago I started seeing new rubber signatures every Monday morning. Pretty soon, so did the cops, and set up to watch the area. As the road dead ends at the office, scooping the racers was like clubbing baby seals...
PS: I too "fear for my Rear"!
