BMW Z3 M humbled...
I was coming back from Marshall TX after my FMS aluminum DS install when i saw a BMW roadster. I pulled even with him and gave it a little gas. He looked over, smiled, and proceeded to do a fly by. I returned the favor in turn. Then, i sped up, got ahead of a small clump oftraffic and slowed waiting for him to line up w/me. He eventually did, we slowed to about 60-65ish and nailed it at the same time. Dead even all teh way through my 3rd gear, i fumbled 4th, and ended up at his bumper, dead locked. noone pulled more than 1 foot either way all the way to about the top of 4th on my factory tac at 6K ish (probably really a little less) the speedo was around 100+- when we let off. Pulled next to him to give a thumbs up and he waggled his finger in the universal "no, not again" gesture. Anywho, it was a good run. IT wiped the huge grin he had off his face in a hurry.

I think this was the 2001/2002 version, not sure, but i am pretty sure it wasnt the 240hp one (00 or older) b/c i woulda killed that, those are about like 350Z's from what i hear. The car had paper tags, but it may have been pre-owned, I have no idea. Just doing some research, im thinking it was the 01/02 with the 3.2L 315 bhp motor.

Very odd, im looking at what i think is the same car online at Crest auto sales and it was a 1999 but that makes no sense. Hrmmm, if it WAS the 240hp one i really am befuddled after some of the other races i have had (the car had a "Crest" tag on the back) so i dont know. Wierd...modded perhapse?

Sometimes roll racing is the great equalizer. A car you would beat by 2 lengths becomes a side by side roll race from the right speed. I would have thought you would run with a new M3 with your list of mods. I would be looking for an answer if I ran side by side with a 240hp model. Of course he might have stepped up with a supercharger or some other mods. Nice run regardless.

Okay, i contacted the Crest dealership that i THOUGHT sold him the car. They have one JUST LIKE IT listed and its the 240hp version...but they said its still sitting on their lot : ) guess that means it wasnt the 1999 (at least that one) and I am inclined to say that it was the 315bhp one. Yes, they have the M3 engine. Its jsut de-tuned. Reason im pretty sure its the 315 bhp car is that model weighs 3100+ driver. That put him at around 3350 judging by how he looked. I was around 3500 at the time. Giving him 15 bhp advantage by weight. Also, my motor is rated 340 flywheel. Taking weight into consideration, that would mean he has the = of 330 bhp. I can VERY EASILY SEE based on this me hanging DEAD EVEN with the 315 bhp version. Did a lot of looking and they run 13.1-13.3@104-109. Anywho, that fits in with how i have done running similar cars. im sticking with the 315 bhp M story : )

That must have torn you up inside to go to the lengths of calling a dealership to see if it was a car they had sold. So from all of your other posts and this one your car is comparable to a 13.0-13.2 ish in the 1/4. Nice run.

STANGGER 88...GO TO A TRACK..IF IT'S TO FAR GO TO A DYNO SHOP...
IF THATS STILL TO FARR THEN ORDER A GTECH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Seriously man...I love you and think your a really kool and intelligent guy...But trying to find out how fast your car is by street racing just isnt accurarate at all...
I go to the track twice a month and also have a Gtech..
I got the model that circuit city sells and that thing is extremely acurrarate..
Just find a nice level 1/4 mile stretch....Do your run and then minus 3 tenths and 3 mph from whatever it says you get...
That will give you an honest example of what your car can really do..
BTW..Nice humbling

I agree with you 100% Vette, The reason I have not gone to a track yet is that I am honestly kinda scared of it. Every night I go someone always totals their car. I cant afford that. Another thing is that I am waiting until my birthday (january) to buy some slicks or DR's and a spare set of rims and next week am putting in upper/lower control arms. Anywho, all that is just a bunch of excuses (while semi-valid) and I really do need to go. I was going to go to Gilliam but the weekend I wanted to go, they closed for the winter i guess, when they open, if they are not already open, i fully plan on going, slicks or not. But first I want to track down my phantom oil loss problem, im losing 1 qt every 1500 miles. THe motor is brand new crate motor and i see/smell NO OIL, even on crank up in the morning. I personally think it is leaking. Any tips/ideas appreciated. I will say that my race iwth the M roadster DID pretty much confirm for me that I am at around 330-340 flywheel hp. But yeah, that doesnt matter if it wont hook up. I really do need to post a timeslip. I'm workin on it.

Z4M = V8 440hp
The S54 Z3M roadsters were down a bit on horsepower due to a more restrictive intake/exhaust route.
98-00 S52 240hp M roadster
99-00 S52 240hp M coupe
01-02 S54 M coupe and roadster.
I owned a 99 for 4 years and a 02 for a year.
From a roll -- given your mods and the fact that I have also built up a similar 92 fox notch I'd argue it could have been a 240hp car.

Hrmm, who knows, they do the 1/4th in 14.0-14.4 and mph 97-101. I doubt it was the 240hp version. Even with our weight difference, I just dont see it, but if it was, then the 315 bhp version is an LS1 raper unless I have been running really slow LS1's.

S52's are generally 13.6-13.8 cars @ 102-3 Like the 5.0 good times are all in the first 60' -- whereas with the LS1 you can still make up for small errors ....
The quickest reported S54 roadster ran a 12.556 (I forget the trap speed). My coupe was stock for stock quicker than a friends LS1. It would walk him slowly from 50MPH rolls until we stopped at around 100. 500 bucks later this was no longer the case. Gotta love the LS1.
