650 FWHP Civic.....nonsense??!!!????
I am new to the LS1tech. I just recently purchased a 01 WS6, I have officially left the ford side. I know this section is all about races and kills, which this is to a certain degree. I am just trying to figure out the stupidity in something like this. Over the Christmas holidays I met my cousin's new boyfriend. He drives a WRX and is apart of the this South Texas Car or Import club, don't quote me on the name...it is something like that.
I live south of Houston, TX and he is from Corpus Christi. Anyways he tells me it is the fastest car club in South Texass, supposedly all the cars there are putting down 400 plus horses to the ground(imports). So he tells me what he has done to his WRX and I tell him what is done to my WS6. Then he proceeds to tell me about this civic in their car club that is putting down 650 FWHP.....i was caught off guard and I asked him how much it cost to build that motor. He says like 15 grand, the motor is running on 30lbs of boost. All I could think is what the HELL???!!!
He said it runs in the 10s, I said that is nice in all, but at the end of the day it is a civic....a freakin civic!!! Someone asks him what he drives, I drive a civic? I personally would feel like a HO if that was me! I have a civic, but it is my daily driver aka(road ho). I know you guys have a lot more experience at this than I do, I still consider myself a rookie. But how badazz of a setup could u build for a F body for 15 grand. Build a bad azz stroker motor and run a fat turbo or blower on it!!!!! I was just caught off guard and shocked....I realize that it costs a lot money for power. Which I am all about, but not in a civic. But I guess it really doesn't matter to me, just seems extremely ignorant to me...but hey whatever blows up ur dress!

I would think it cost the guy alot more than 15gs to get that kind of HP. I knew of a guy that put 12 thousand into his civic turbo engine and it only ran high 11s. Sounds like he was making it up.

there are more than a few 600+ whp civics rolling around, not all civic guys are owners. They run gt35 and gt42r's on fully built motors.
There is alway the possibility and this company is responsible for alot of the hi Hp imports in texas www.one-fab.com

15 g's gets you an MTI 427 LS1 if you want a turnkey setup.
15 g's could also get you a big bore iron block lsx setup with forced induction which would pound the civic.
To each his own. I bet 600fwhp Civic man is one happy dude and feels very accomplished, even if he drives a Civic.

i think it goes something like this??? forgive me if I mess it up
"real cars don't make front wheel horsepower, they pull the front
wheels off the ground"

Wait, so it's the "Fastest car club in texas" and and the measuring stick is "at least 400hp to the ground"?
Uh, Texas has some BADASS cars. Cars that run more than 400hp with the plugs pulled on half their cylinder banks. Cars that bikes are afraid of.
I'm not saying that I wouldn't be all happy if my car was putting down 400rwhp, I'm just saying that I wouldn't think I was king of anything with that kind of speed. Maybe king of bumfuck deleware or something.... Definatly not texas.

15Gs is pretty reasonable.
Figure 3-4 for exsaust mani/turbo/wastegate/BOV/intercooler.
Figure about 4 grand for a built block.
Maybe 2 for the head and Cams.
Another 2 for management.
Figure another 1 for injectors and pump and AFPR.
Then the infamous other catagory.
You could do it a lot cheaper with some hacking and tweaking though. 15 is pretty realistic. All these F&F wannabes saying they put 80K into their cars are idiots showing off.
As for the Civic thing. Imagine how much fun he could have with that car if it looks stock. Just get a down pipe with a dump and a mild exsaust. Most people would think its just another ricer with big front wheels. Seriously, that could be one of the meanest sleepers around. Plus the fact that a car like that making 650 will get you more recognition than an LS1 making similar power.

I wouldnt say that. Civics are so damn light that 400 hp to the ground will run mid low 11s if you hook it decently, not even a good hook. A friend of mine built a Civic that had 630 whp and his car ran low 10s @ 140 + mph, and that was with him getting only like 1.8 short times. Only thing he ever lost to on the street was a sprayed Hayabusa, he used to eat bikes all day long with it. F bodies are heavy, his car only weighed 2200 pounds.

Fast imports are out there, just the fast ones get their rep tainted by the infamous fart can/wing/sticker/LED ricer crowd. A 650Hp civic can be done, it is not too common to see though.

well ill tell you you wont get a blown/turboed stroker for 15k, thats for sure.
Youd be lucky to get a 408 with good heads and fuel for that much.
that doesnt include the turbo, the turbo kit, tuning, labor, rear end, upgraded drive train parts, etc....

15k on an LS1, I think you've done a good job so far.
H/C set up: 3k
4.10 gears + DR's: 1k
Full Exhaust: 2k
90/90 Intake set up: little over 1k
150+ shot: under 1k
F/I set up: 3-7k
Tune: couple hundred
Good Driver: Priceless
Now I'd say you're gonna have to spend some of that Forced Induction money on a stronger rear end, but assuming the car handles the power for a few passes there's no reason low 10's should be out of the picture. Hell without the spray you that set up would be good for at least 600whp on a low psi setting.
