Default GT500 vs 01 Z06 w/ curves

I came across a GT500 the other day when I was in my 2001 385hp Z06. It was in a subdivision in the boonies that has a perfect circle of roads all around it divided into pies, the whole thing is maybe 10 miles in diameter. So, I'm on the inner circle, on the inside lane which is a right hand curve (I'm going clockwise).

Then a GT500 pulls out in front of me, about, oh, 150-200 yds ahead. He sees me, I see him. I go faster, only able to go about 70 on the inner circle, but he was on it too. I couldn't catch him since he started way ahead, but I was gaining. As we approach the other side of the inner circle we both make a left onto a 3 mile straight 4 lane divided road. At this point I'm 200 feet back.

He clearly is on the gas, and I make that left turn going 50 (2nd gear for me and that is perfect gearing for me to exit a corner) and he probably took it at 20-30. It is a fairly large piece of asphault so he shold have been able to take a good line. And he looked l like he was trying to turn as hard as he could but couldn't. He overshot the best line and managed to stay on the asphault.

As I exit the corner I start gaining hard as expected, then he slowed my pull when I got about 50 ft from him. When I got close enough to see orange peel, I left off a tad since I did not want to pass him around 130 (I didn't look but I was in 4th which is between 100-140 mph for me) with two lanes and trees on either side. The first row of houses, which is a good 3/8 of a mile from the corner we started from, came up, so I jammed down on the binders to safe speeds and let him keep going.

I was surprised how fast it was even if it couldn't handle well. I mean, I did come from behind on a large sweeping right hand curve and a hard left then a good straightaway.

Nice! I cant wait to run one myself. It should be fun! How fast would you say it was? I would say 12's @ 112+? What do you think?

Easily a 110-113 mph car. Haven't seen one at the track yet. Maybe there will be one next week. I was just at BMP last sat night in the vette and only trapped 114.59 since it was 82F and really humid out. DA was pushing 1800-1900 ft.

I don't think anyone is expecting the GT500 to compete with even a regular vette when it comes to handling. That must have been a fun run

It is so sad that the new GT500 is hardly any quicker than the SVT Cobra.
.2 secs and and 2-3 mph quicker at best.

Besides, that car looks like crap, imo, comapred to the SVT cobra.

I agree with you on the looks, the 03/04 cobra's look awesome (and fun to drive...gotta love the whine)

The body style of the new generation mustangs have just been washed out. I loved the retro look at first, but now that I see 100's of them every day (mostly V6's ) They're just too common now. I'd take the SVT over the GT500 anyday.

V6's enough said, I totally agree. I still like the GT 500 for some reason.

Handling has a lot to do with the driver FWIW.

When I had the Buick, with its awesome M+S tires, a 99-04 GT couldn't pull away from me on the turns; he kept undershooting and never reaplied the thorttle at the right point.

Good kill

Yep, gotta be smooth on and off the gas to get around a corner. Me being 900-1000 #'s lighter helps too. Weighed my Z06, 3000#'s even with 1/8 tank of gas. I hear the GT500 weighs north of 3900#'s...

Not only that, the car is very nose heavy so I imagine that, along with the massive torque the car makes, will make for some tricky oversteer mid corner.

The Z06 is very predicable, always loved that about it

It has slight understeer in the factory setup, and yeah, the Z06 is a very forgiving car if you go 11/10ths
