Default question about sr20s

hey guys, this race happened a LONG time ago, but i've been thinking about it lately. why the heck are the 240sx's with the sr20 swaps so quick? is it really the whole power-to-weight ratio thing, cuz i've heard they're only puttin down a little over 200. the particular guy i raced only had the motor swap and an open down pipe and he got me by three cars. all i have is a 3.73 and i run low 14s (he cuts a 13 flat, but how?), but i can't see how i got beat that much. i guess its the whole turbo thing. any comments? thanks.

There are different variations of the SR20 motor, the highest making 250 HP. They are very strong engine and will allow alot of HP and boost with supporting mods making them very dangerous. And yes it helps that they are in a vary light chassis.

The SR20DET can support a lot more hp than they have stock and respond quickly to cheap mods. My cousin has one in his datsun 510 he's building. I need to do H/C before he gets that sucker finished or I'll be in trouble!

It depends upon the year of SR20DET. I don't think that he raced you with a stock powered one. I know several guys on another board that have them, and they do not run 13's flat w/ just a stock block. Most of them only put out 200whp stock. The thing is that like the 4g63 motor, they respond well to mods. They can handle alot of boost, and basic bolt ons will put them above 260whp, with a car that's probably 800lbs. lighter then yours. Once they start adding larger turbos you gotta have more then just heads/cam, you need some boost yourself.

Some guy from another board i'm a member of had a 440whp SR20DET powered 240. It would pop off 11 sec. sprints regularly. Not a bad block, too bad nissan was too stupid to sell it here. They put a freaking truck engine in the 240's here.

Ummm...SR20DET making 250whp? pffft. My friend's roommate has one sitting in the garage making around 300-350ish and it's not that great. The last 240SX SR20DET swap + MBC + a few other support mods I saw at the strip ran a 13.3-4@113 all day.

sr20s are no joke. The redtops are rated at 205 hp, but with just down pipe, 3 inch exhaust and uping the boost they are around 250ish at the motor. The 180sx (240 in japan) with the stocker sr20 runs about 14.2 @100ish. They are nothing from a stop, but can be deadly from a roll. A friend of mine had one that was running 13.9 on 12psi with minor mods, but he could put down ls1 cars from a roll. He raced a 99 ws6 with slp catback, lid and other minor mods, and he beat him by 2 carlengths. I can beat most of the modded 240s around here through the 1/8 mile in my 93z28 w/ k&n fipk, flowmaster muffler, hi flo cat, airfoil, tb bypass. From a roll (30 or higher) ive only beaten one. btw, i dont see a 13 flat basically stock. Hes probably just as fast as your average low 13 second car from a roll, but from a stop you should pull hard, for a while anyway

Best friend has one the sr20 motor with a good turbo and a 3" exhaust pushing 15 psi, Says he walks trans ams all the time so i raced him from a roll and I inched him ever so slightlight and he was breaking up the whole time(think it was a boost leak). If he wasn't breaking up he probibly would have taken me. he blew his turbo that race and has been down for a while. He wants to race again but i said only from a Dig, no more rolls,LOL. Badass import. definitly a force to be reconed with.

Think about it these cars weigh 2800 lbs and they are putting down stock about 230ish rwhp (which most people modify these cars right away). So minor bolt ons will give more power ie boost controller ect... So don't sleep on this car/combo my friend has this car with about 326 rwhp and he was neck and neck with me from a roll.

hmm i know a little about swaps into 240s. only takes 200whp to get them into the 13's most of the time. I kill lots of 300+hp cars with my swapped one and it might on a great day make 250whp

no question a modded ls1 car should be able to take a stock/mild swapped one. I just beat up on sti's and evo's. I do have a fmic, turbo upgrade and 20psi though.

All I know is the SR20DET 240SX at the track where I live ran low 13's@112-113 all day long. He may have been big turbo, I have no idea.

14.3/98 with 3.73s? What altatude are you at? At sea level an LT1 is a lot faster than that, let alone an LS1.

Most SR20s are about 200HP, and they are not laying down 230WHP stock.

They did sell SR20s here, but not in turbo form. The Infiniti G20 had one for example. The KA24 2.4L in the 240s is pretty nice, people used to give them no credit (myself included) but they can be boosted reasonably well.

240s are in the high 2000's range for weight. Thats good, but traction can be a big issue for them.

one of my buddies has a 240 SX with the SR20 motor with a very good sized turbo and supporting mods on pump gas he runs about 17 psi and on 110 gas he runs about 26 psi and puts down nearly 500 horse to the wheels and runs 11.50's in the quarter mile with trap speeds from 120-125 that is is pretty insane for what it is

i raced a 350whp 240sx with a turbo and when i was in the wrong gear he walked me.... im sure when i was bolt ons only it would have been a close race.. i wouldnt be suprised if he edged a bolt on ls1 out. but needless to say 2nd gear at 55-60 mph = an *** kicking

A "friend" of mine had a 240 with an sr20 swap. No matter what he done he always lost to me. Ta was stock and and beat him, GTP was lightly modded and beat him. GTP was then mildly modded he upped the boost and i still beat him haha.

Of course i will say he never had a correct tune and the thing burnt up 2 turbo's so you can prolly come to the same conclusion i have come to. It wasn't that the car couldn't be fast, it's that the owner wasn't capable of making it fast . I'm sure there are some fast one's just like you guys never find a fast 5.0, i have yet to find a fast 240 with that swap lol.

Haha thanks, i'd have to say though the TA is owned by my g/f but i talked her into buying it and i kinda took it over . I've loved the 4 gen f-bodies since they came out, i think they are one of the greatest looking cars on the road.

But i still love my ford, hell i even got ford rims on the GTP lol. It's alittle harder and cost's more to make the little 302 run with an LS1 but nothin like getting behind the wheel of that bastard and rumbling up the street.

You buy the 5.0 for a DD it will soon be modded and you'll have another car as a DD lol.
