Default EVO IX vs. C5 Vette vs. New Mustang GT

Got into it with a C5 Vette, and honestly it looked bone stock to me, and I was kind of a little disappointed that we were neck and neck. I would have expected to pull on him a little, but then again this was a highspeed roll. Again not sure if it was stock, but sure did look it. So as I said I was a little disappointed and wondering if I was suffering a boost leak, when a new Mustang GT try to get into the action. I'm pretty sure he was stock, because he still had the dealer plates on (so much for break in). So from about 75mph to 110mph I pulled atleast 6 cars. I thank the Mustang GT for being my guinea pig .

I think others (not LS1 owners of course) underestimate the C5 Vette a little. With the C5 Z06, C6, and C6 Z06 some of us sometimes forget about the C5 Vette which even in stock form is a pretty quick form. I just scratch my head when I read on other forums how stock 350Zs, S2000s, or whatever beat these cars, BS!

By the way I am not stock, I have TBE, MBC@23PSI, Filter, Fuel Pump, and ECUFlash

Good death. At 23psi, I would of thought that your car would beat a stock C5.

The C5 vette must have had some work done that wasn't visually noticeble. I can hang with, and on occassion pull on a stock C5 without the bottle, so you should have walked it pretty good!

My friend has an EVO 9 with the same mods as you, but he runs 25 pounds of boost and went 12.5 at 109

As you can see an C5 vette is very capable of trapping 110 PLUS mph in the 1/4 mile..

And weather Fbody or 350Z guys or who ever want to admit it...They are pretty fast...

The fastest 350Z in the world ran a 13.5 bone stock..Fastest c5 ran a 12.6 bone stock. their not even comparable..

Honestly the problem with Corvettes is that more people buy them for the image/achievement than the speed. Unlike an STI or EVO or cobra that you buy mostly cas it's a fast car....

C5's cost 45 grand for a base coupe to 60 grand for a fully loaded convertable...The age group that can afford the cars when new plus their perspective as an image/achievement dose nonthing but bad things for the vette...

When i first got my c5 I raced people with the 2.73 geared auto trannie in D and the traction control on. i still beat 350Z's and such but the races were very close..

Took the car to the drag strip and averaged 13.9-14.3 at 97-100 mph...

I was seriously considering taking the car back to the dealer..But instead checked out corvette forum for advice. They simply said to go to the drag strip again and put the auto trannie in 3 and turnoff the traction control...

very first run was a 13.6 at 103 mph. later followed up that night by a 13.5 at 104 mph ( keep in mind this is a 2.73 geared auto)...

my car dropped half a second and picked up 4-5 mph by doing this... ( and this is hawaii so the weather is always the same)

The point is..how many c5 drivers have never been to the drag strip and dont know how important it is to turn off the traction control or for the auto's put the gear in 3????????????????????????????????????????????????? ???????????????????????????

id honestly say 75% of the c5 racers out their who indulge in a street race once or twice a year have no idea, and thatswhy the c5 has gotten a bad name...

I can post this list a thousand times of high 12'sat 111 mph...but if I had raced you a few years ago in my vette before i leared about the traction control and 3rd gear...and was still running low 14's at 98 mph...Well even a stock 350Z could give me a good run and this list wouldntt mean crap tp that person.

I believe this to be true and is why I believe I was able to put buss leanths on one C5 (New Plates on it)without the spray. He then rolled up and asked if I was stock. I said yes. then I said no.
Good kill for the Evo.

lol wow I would have been #2 fastest stock M6.. 12.8 @ 113mph here in Houston..

NOT ALL VETTES ARE THAT FAST! Trust me I've watched people go 13.8s - 14.0s in them.

It's not the vette, its the dumbass driving it. Anything near 14's is ridiculous. If you can't hit at least mid 13's in a stock C5, you should not race it.

Evo 8's run similar times as the 350z(with an advantage of the 350z up top). If there slow, so are the evo's I guess . Not many Evo 8's trap over 100mph, even with a decent driver. Given equal drivers, the nod goes to the 350z. And as for the S2000, there pretty quick, considering they run high 13's low 14's at 100-101mph. But hey, if your boosting 23psi(4-8psi more than stock) of course your going to pull a stock 350z or s2000.

Thats going to change fast. With the Z06s and C6s and other non-vette alternatives, C5s are attainable in terms of second owner cars big time. A little over 20K gets youa low mileage car capable of kicking major ***. I really want to do a LS1 RX7, but if C5 prices stay low I might just go the easy route.

But so far you are dead on on that, which is kinda sad. I have a DSM right now, and deal with exact opposite problem. All kinds of stupid people get DSMs because they are cheap speed and for no other reason. The guys make it hard to be a smart DSMer.

Try the same theory at altatude. A lot of the country is not at H-town atmo conditions.

Treed a brand new Evo IX with a TBE I put in last time I was Firebird. He ran a 13.9 and even at that (guys very first run down the track) he trapped IIRC 102. At a track where most new Mustangs were solidly in the low 14s that night. And Firebird is at what, maybe 1700FT? The 350Zs were not trapping any 100s with just exhaust. Maybe it was a bad night, I dunno. My car felt great.

Yea the EVO IX's are pretty quick, faster than the 350z's. I've seen vids of stock ones running 106 traps.

When I bought my vette I found out about the 3rd gear and traction control pretty quickly. The 2:73s are alright if you want to make 200mph runs in open areas, but im switching to 3:90 gears with a Yank 3600 stall. Im hoping to get high 10's low 11s with my setup this spring,. I'll be running H/C and a dry 100 shot.

Points for driver mod. I saw a C5 Z06 run a 14.2 once at some insane trap. Guy just sat there and spun for the 60. I think the best word for that would be vomitous.

TC and bad setup can make almost anything slow.

Good Kill without knowing what you are putting to the wheels, nor the vette I would have thought you would bull him harder. On the other hand you gave him what should have been his strength IMHO. In addition to the driver mod comments, lots of other variables could have come to play as well but you clearly were the best of the two drivers that day. Great post. I've got a few friends that are running mid 11's in Evo VIIIs if that is the way you say it. In the older cars though there seems to be a lot more fun and less breakage in road racing vice drag racing. I understand they beefed up the drivetrain in the IXs.
