How fast are '85 IROC's?

My 1986 Z28 had a carbed 305. I believe they called it a 305 HO (high output). But I am pretty sure my Buick Lesabre could have taken it. And in 1986 the 350 was only offered as a TPI mated with an auto. I don't know what the 1985 car had. I believe the 350's first year in a 3rd gen was 1986 as I recall.

i just want some results. I feel like all this build up is for nothing tho. either this guy has a super sleeper and will rape him or the probable outcome and the 3rd gen owner is just ignorant and he is gonna be staring at fourth gen ***!!!

Interesting, I think my old car is dead and burried.

Well Sacramento Raceway was having some kind of "Sport Compact Event" this weekend, so we couldn't do the deed. It'll have to be next weekend. In fact, I will also inquire more about this guys engine...since its sparked quite a debate.

The car I had was a 4-barrel 305 auto. It also had a higher speed speedometer (i think it was 155, but it couldn't do 155 if it was falling from the sky).

well since I hang around the 3rd gen scene, the 350 TPI only came in 1987 and up with an automatic only. No Iroc's or Z28 came with TBI...only carb until 1986 and TPI starting in late 85. ONLY 350's had to be an auto...305 TPI's has the T-5 in it. TPI's are so restrictive, and 4.10 rear is too much for this car, thats what I have. If you just have a stock motor in it...you will just be winding out too fast.
Just info on the 350 Tranny issue...the reason that most ppl say they never put a 5 speed in it was because it would be at par with the vette in those days and the vette was supposed to be faster, thats why they did it.
I got a 1987 Iroc Speedo in my car, and it has a limit of 145 mph, which was the highest you could go. Now i have the 5.0 305 carbed motor, and I got beat by a 1999 Plymouth Breeze....hence why Im getting ready to put an LS1 in it. My car weights around 3200 lbs with the 305 and myself in it...the LS1 will make it about 3000 lbs...so yea when its in, the third gen will blow your 4th gen doors off lol

After reading the mods in your sig I started laughing. Man, that guy has NO chance. I have a friend with an 87 350 TPI Iroc. On his best day USING his N2O kit I would still smoke his *** when I was bolt-ons ONLY.
Don't act scared or even remotely concerned while at work when people talk about it. Be confident, and show them that the new cars have more than just a styling upgrade

The issue with the 350/T-5 is that the high torque of the 350 is enough to cause deflection of the case of the T-5. With the case distorting, the internals shred themselves.
4.11 gears are too much for a 305 or 350 stock TPI or Carb unless some serious work is done to the engine to help it breath to the 6k range. This would require the telltales signs of headers, large exhaust, heads, intake, cam and tune (if TPI). IF it's TPI it WILL choke after 4500 rpm, even if ported. The only other options would be a LT1 intake or something aftermarket that doesn't resemble the old TPI. Look for siamesed runners. When they say it's a spider humping the engine, it looks like 8 legs, but in a siamesed runner setup, you'd see 4 per size, an indicator of some work done on the engine.
Then there's the pre 88 26 spline axles. If the 10 bolt seems weak now, back then they'd snap like toothpicks. 4.11 (small gear set), 26 spline axles, t-5... all of that would not bode well for a car trying to push anything more than 250ft/lb and 200hp.... too many weak points to try to run power that would match let alone beat an LS1 stock setup...

I had a 85 Iroc 305 TPI, it was definetly quicker than my 92 RS with 305 TBI, but the 85 wouldn't even hang with my friends 95 mustang GT with the 302 in it. The 85's made alittle up from being a smaller displacement by having a more agressive cam in them but still didn't help any. My 02 camaro would no doubt walk that 85.

One of my best friends has a mint 12,000 mile 85 Iroc 305 TPI with a few mods. I raced him bone stock and it really isn't even close. My other buddy even torched him with his 03 Grand Prix with exhaust and chip. Even if it is a 350, they only have 11 more hp than the 305. When you take off it will look like he is standing still.

I own a 91 Z28 350 tpi. The 350's only came in auto. It's possible it has a 350 swap, but I doubt it and that tranny isn't really worth a crap especially with the torque of the 350 TPI.
I also own a 2001 SS 6-speed. If you race from about a 30 roll he'll still with you for about...3 seconds and then you'll be gone like it's nobody's business. If it's a 305 TBI...it wont even be a race. 14.4 @ 96 for the newer 350 tpi(L98) 1990-1992 seems to be the average(what i got). 86-89 prob mid 14's @ 95ish as well depending on the driver, maybe slower.
So even if he had a 350 with 4.11's and and m5 you're lookin at low 14's tops unless he has bolt ons then MAYBE high 13's, but probably not.

Slower than the wife's Honda. I raced an 88 5.7L Iroc with the honda & won.
I get the impression this 85 Iroc isn't stock, unless you're an idiot you should know the difference between a 305 and a 350 if you own the car.
