Word.^^^^

Those 5 speed trannys are junk there is no way he can speed shift or anything like that safely not unless its built and there really weak trannys so I doubt he has 4.11 and slicks. Those tranny are only rated at like 280 Lb/ft

The T-5 in my 87 Formula would whine and make noise all the time and I was easy as hell on it.

And um yes you should stomp a mud hole in his ***.

Did you forget that LS1's rule the planet???

Well, I was really hoping to get some results when I saw this thread was old, oh well.

With a 350 swapped in it could be pretty fast. I had a 87 Z28 that I swapped a decent 350 in w/ Vortec heads, decent cam, full exhaust, etc and I worked a few LS1s over with it. When it got totaled by a dopey neighborhood girl I replaced it with a 94 Z28, which felt so damn slow it wasn't even funny. With most of the bolt ons my LT1 was still slower.

People underestimate the thirdgens because of the boat anchor stock 305s they had for the most part. Most of the factory engine offerings were indeed junk, but the car is a great platform that you can stick just about any engine/tranny combo you can come up with in. I guarantee I could build a pretty budget friendly carbed 350 that would run hard as hell in a decently setup thirdgen and surprise a heck of alot of people, especially if it was going up against half of the clueless people posting in this thread.

I like my 99 T/A better though of course, the LS1/T56 combo is a great setup, especially when you consider the power it puts down stock or w/ bolt ons for the price/drive-ability it offers.

I would really love an update to let us know if this dudes 85 was worth a **** or not... My money is on not, but you never know.

I had a 84 Z with the L69 305, it was replaced with a punched 350, big cam and headers, the power came out when the Q-jet was recalibrated....It ran 13.5's all day, very fast car...but you could clearly hear it was not stock

i used to have a 89 tpi a4 with a stock rebuilt 305 tpi and it ran a whooping 16.0 @84mph. Also know a guy that used to have 89 gta with a stock 350 l98 with 150 shot nos and he ran the best 1/4 of 13.1@107.5 with a 2.0 60'. granted that these tpi cars a re very torquey and does well off the line but fall flat on their face

I had an 85 Z28 A4 back 'in the day'. On a good day, it ran high 9's in the 1/8th. Don't remember the mph, but 74-ish seems to ring a bell. That should convert to a mid 15 @ ~92-94 mph.

Looked good though.

What's with all the third gen hate here? In my opinion they look a hell of a lot better than melted bar of soap 4 gens. Mabey thats why I own one. Ha ha. A third gen with a decent 350sbc (zz4) is a low 13 second car and with some spray (100 shot) and slicks its knocking on 11's door. In 20 years when we all drive electric cars the ls1 is going to be in the same position most of you are putting the third gens in, and then the third gens will be as collectible as first gen f bodies are now, just wait and see.

Well here I am! I didn't see that the thread was updated. I'd have to say though, I AM rather embarrassed that I started this whole thread and had no results to show for it. I'd be pissed too. I didn't realize that it moved to street racing and kill stories. So heres what happened:

On "that weekend," I went to the track to meet him. Well, he showed up and said that he didn't have enough money to race ($50), plus he didn't bring his slicks. So, after I'd been through weeks of getting my car ready (oil change, weight reduction, etc.) I was too pissed to take time off of work, drive 30 miles back to the track, and attempt to try this again. Obviously, he's scarred, plus that day I went on to run my best time so far of 13.1...with of course a shitty 2.5X 60ft.

If we ever end up doing this, I will for sure make an update, but for now, I don't want to play anymore games with this guy...

Traction > you.... 13.1 with bolt-ons and a cam? what'd you trap? 2.5 60' lol.

isn't it like .2 off E.T. for every .1 off 60' approximately? so say you get a 2.0 60' thats like a full second off your E.T.

I guess it depends on your trap..

I trapped 111. And as you can see from my sig, I have everything that aids in traction except stickies. I'm one of the paranoid people with 10 bolts

111 just seems low..my friend trapped like 109 with his lid/exhaust T/A... I guess every car is different, i'm sure traction has a lot to do with it as well.

You sure smoking some good **** there, buddy....collectible??? To me the only one should be the Trans Am GTA 20 anniversary with the turbo V6 and the regular Trans Am GTA. Also the Firehawks....thats about it, IMO.

If the motor is stock, and all he's got is 4.11s and slicks, you will pull away so hard that you'll suck the paint off his car. You're probably trapping 15-20mph faster than a TBI 305, assuming that's the motor still in his car. You never know what sort of mods he might be hiding though (like N2O).
350TBI's had a wicked 16x horsepower and ran 16's. my old 3.4L V6 firebird that ran a 16.7@80mph could hang with one of those...assuming it's stock, of course. if he has an LT1 swap or something, it'll be a lot more of a race.

1989 TTA is a great car, and collectible

1990 Formula 350 is a great car as well (black or red, single off side hood bulge, great looking clean/neat car)

1987-9 GTA, looks great in Maroon with gold BBS style rims. Classy look back then, somewhat timeless. 350 auto of course

1985 IROC, first of the "performance" 3rd gens with the TPI, BIG **** back in the day, I remember when they cam out, and I was almost old enough to drive....very exciting to see the first black and gold IROC, just badass!

My favorite, one that is HARD to find...1992 Camaro Z28, Purple Haze/Ebony leather, auto, 350, loaded, big wing. My favorite 3rd gen and hard to find one! I am always looking for a nice example of this car...

I like the looks of 3rd gens better than 4th gens. Performance is NO comparison, you would need thousands of $$ in a 3rd gen to run with a mostly stock 4th gen. Both generations handle and brake like **** though!

I would MUCH rather cruise a 1992 Purple Haze Z28 than any 4th gen I have seen. Of course, I just sold a low 10 second 4th gen to a friend of mine, so racing is a different story
