Default 00 Z28 vs 93 Laser Turbo (Update!!)

Last night a friend of mine who is crazy with his 93 Turbo called me up.

He recently installed a larger turbo and intercooler, had it tunned up...plus did sum weight reduction. According to him he should be putting down close to 350 rwhp. I didnt realize how light these cars are, i think they are in the 2500 -2600lbs range.

We went for a cruise because he wanted to find a race. After no one committing on the cruise back home, we lined up and went 2 times.

First from 50 to about 110... took him instantly by 1 car the whole time.

Second time from 30 to 110 took him again this time only by 1/2 a car, i missed 4th briefly and he almost caught me, once 4th was in i pulled him slowly by 1 car.

Needles to say he was a lil upset, he thought he could take me.

As for me i was impressed with his setup. Not slow thats for sure.
BTW, in no way is my car setup for drag........if i had a drag setup and shifted smoozer i beleive he would of been in my rear mirror without a doubt.

Yeah I know first hand those little fkers are fast. Nice kill. I raced a cobra in my 91 eclipse. It has a built motor and stock turbo 20 psi I lost by 1 1/2 cars from an 50 roll to a 130. The cobra owner is my boy he played with me though my little eclipse was slow!

His plans are to get sum slicks for the front, race gas and bump it up to 30lbs of boost.

Sounds like it'll be fast but damn he is near breaking point on everything, motor, tranny and diff.

I warned him already....!

Get all the races on video,so if and when it goes kaboom,we can all see!!!
I feel bad for a guy whos car breaks, but not so much for the person who throws as much as it can handle and wonders why it broke.

What is your car set up for then if not drag?

Straight line, from a roll, not much will change with more "drag setup" stuff.
Your cam and suspension is a great setup for whuppin on him.

nice kill

My suspension is pretty stiff, doesnt transfer weight, and I dont have tall gears.

A drag setup to me consists of tall gears (4.11s), slicks and or skinnies, soft suspension to transfer weight.

His car will probably be parked within the next 2 months...almost guaranteed.

sweet....what color is his car? Whats his setup? Im running 25-26psi, putting around 380fwhp on a 16g, dsmlink, 272/272/ bolt ons. Car went 116mph traps on just 20psi 93 pump and a weak timing map. Be careful lasers specially the fwd's are the lightest out of all the dsm's, It dosent take alot to get these things moving from a roll.

Nooooo! 93s are invincible

I have a 93 AWD myself. Nice kill!

DSMs are hard to predict power-wise. Lots of variables with a high pressure forced induction system. But considering you are likely in the high 300s or even low 400s yourself, he is probably not far south of 350.

I would love to know what turbo, intercooler, and boost he is running.

As far as weight, these cars are almost always right at about 3000LBS in an AWD without driver. The interior and all that crap does not weigh all that much. I probably come in at about 3000 total, but I have no AC, no power steering, no cruise controll, and I know what to remove. FWDs can get a bit lighter with no rear diff, transfer case, driveshaft, etc.

As far as what the car can take, 350 is not so much. Stock longblocks will handle 450 without much trouble. The confirmed dyno record is in the 500s. What will get chewed up is clutches at that power level. But a FWD will have less trouble with that (more wheel spin) the stock tranny, contrary to popular beleif, will handle that kind of power OK as well. They just wear out over time due to crappy synchros. Half-shafts are probably his big weakness. If it were me I would be getting some cryo-treated Raxles axles and keep them on the shelf for when the OEMs bite the dust.

'305, thats great power for a cammed 16G car, even in a FWD.

Thanks still on a 150k 7 bolt stock longblock, has arp head studs and a mitsu 4 layer. I cant wait to take it to the track on 26psi...The 16g is externally gated, im praying for 123-125mph, if I can nail that, all the downtime/hardwork will be worth it. If not il be going to a T3 61 .82a/r or something along those lines...

^ that would be one heck of a trap. I have not seen over 118 from a 16G. Then again, that was internlly gated. A 38MM or 44MM wastegate is going get a lot more flow up top. GL!

So does it stand to say I had a decent kill?

And that these cars are no slouches?!!!!!!!!!

It would of sucked if I did loose to him, but im sure he will make it faster soon. I think he makes it a personal challenge to supe up his car until it can defeat mine......

Yes...if he turns it up, you could be in trouble especially from a roll if he has a turbo that can actually sustain that boost. It's light and has very long gears. Lasers especially FWD were the lightest turbo DSMs built. That motor will not sweat at that power level as long as it's PROPERLY tuned. The stock motors have gone deep into the 130's mph range (& run 10's) in a much heavier AWD car; 3,000lbs+. It will not sweat at 350 or even 400whp.

Good kill.

Someone talking dsms! My two favorite cars are f bodies and dsms! I have had 5 dsms but currently have three. One is crazy super modded up 97 talon with huge turbo ,forged engine and all the toys. But dead in garage from an error I made when did the motor. No big deal it will get fixed up by next spring. That car was crazy stupid fast putting out around 550 engine hp at only 21psi on big garrett.Potential is around 650 engine hp at 30psi or so.
I also am building a stripped down 91 auto talon awd with goal of 10s and currently have a daily driver 91 laser fwd. They are light and they are seriously hard to hook up on street tires. Just like you need nittos or something to hook the dsm guy also needs some nittos or drag tires on the fwd ones. The awd ones are wicked on street tires. And can pull stupid 60fts on street tires and unbelievable 60fts on drag tires.

For those of you that haven't driven one try to go test drive one. You will get hooked. They are also pretty easy to work on and not as unreliable as it generally thought but maintenance is important especially changing out the timing belt.

Be happy to send or post pics have posted them in other threads. Course much as am fond of turbo four bangers turbo v8s are also nice! Looking foward to my aps twins in my 99 ta but my 97 talon still might be my fastest car.

UPdate.........

He turned up the boost from 18psi to 26psi....and retuned.

I gave him the re match tonite.

First from a 30mph roll, took him again by almost 2 cars

He then asked for a 3rd gear pull from like 60mph...wtf? I said yes...underestimating.

He immediately pull half a car..and turned that into a full car till we shut it down at 140mph.

THat thing can move once he has full boost, I was out of gear, not complaining, cuz I know he is probably putting down more power than me, but he cant touch my gears and torque from a 2nd gear pull.

Gave him the thumbs up though and again i can safely vouch he is puttin down big #s in a 4banger!

Suddenly I think I want HEads and Ported TB, I havent added much in a long time.....

Nice job!

If he made 350ish at 18 and he is still running efficently at 26, he is definitely an honorable kill.

Those lasers are the lightest of the bunch, def. can't take the modded one's lightly. I used to own a dsm, and it's kinda funny reading about him being at the breaking point, honestly when it come's to dsms they are at the breaking point stock, lol. But they can be made very very fast for very cheap, just gotta keep maintaining them and replacing little **** that goes wrong every other day.

Well Just to set it straight I got him easily from a 2nd gear pull. Bur The Laser got me from the 3rd gear pull. So that one was his Kill.

He is very proud of his car...and like I said he ******* pulled hard from a 3rd gear run.

I couldn't get my car to jump from 60mph and obviously he can. It was crazy to see that lil thing ****** pull ahead.
