Default 89' Camaro with a "marine engine"

My gf has some pics of my car up in her locker (goes to a different school then me) and one of the kids at her school saw it and said he wants to race me. All she knows is that he has a 89' Camaro with a 383 Marine engine he's putting in it... I know he doesnt have a lot of money to put into a car so not sure what to expect.. any thoughts?

I told her to ask him what he will have hp wise and what he expects his 1/4 mile to be. lol shes getting better about the car terms I should have 3.73's and some tires when the race gets here to go along with mods in my sig.. Hoping the weather starts to get better so in a month or a month and a half should be good to go!
I'll try to get one of my buddies who has a camera to help out to get a vid when it goes down.. I'll keep ya'll posted on any new info leading up to the race and what the resaults are.

Most marine cams are meant for maximum torque.. not really hp.. so if he hasnt changed the cam.. it will be punchy off the line and then fall on its face

My friend has a 91 with a 383 stroker, with a forged bottom end and a cam with stock ported heads, and a manifold and bolt ons. The best time he has was a 14.5 at 99.8 though. If the guy didn't do any big tranny work, or put some sticky tires on it wont hook, and you will be gone by the time you hit second.

now if it's got a 3000+ stall and some M/T ET streets out back you wont catch him till the 1/8 is over and then right at the end of the 1/4. My friend has a 01 z/28 with a cut out and at KCIR I bet him in the 1/8 and he just barley gets me at the end of the 1/4. this is with me pulling a 13.9 at 100mph and him pulling 13.5's at 104ish MPH.

So with you're mods he wont stand a chance. you're probally pulling what 12.9's-13.1's???

I havn't been to the track yet but when I get there in the spring that is about the time I'll be looking for, especially with gears and I'm thinking NITTO 555r's out back (car is mainly driven on short summer trips to my gf's and to school occasionally) so I want the tires to be good enough in case I get caught in the rain.

From what you said about your buddy should be a fun race for me and probably a clean victory

Heres the info he gave my gf today.. i think he's expecting a lil more power then he will get. I'm thinking about throwing a 50 shot in my car though just in case... Never dealt with N20 before so wanna start small. What do you all think about these mods against my car with or without a 50 shot.

Rear wheel horse power: somewhere between 365-380

Torque: 370-385

Quarter mile: unsure

Tires: BF Goodrich Radial T/A, Front - 225 70R15, Back - 275 70R15

Mods: cowl induction hood; forged crank, pistons, rods; roller tip lifters; posi; traction bars; B&M tranny shift kit upgrade

Heads & Cam: marine heads & cam, possibly Edelbrock perfomer cam, heads have been ported and polished

Automatic, B&M megashifter

I'm going to highlight everything he's doing wrong with his car!

First off the Tires, he's going to be running the same tires that i am running, I am actualy running 275/50r/15's with 2 peice forged aluminum wheels. One thing good about they tires, they last forever, i've had mine on for a little over a year and a half ago, and they still are about half way. The problem is that you can sit there and heel toe it in first, and then 2nd and they just will not get very sticky. Pretty much there the hardest compound drag radial you can get. +last long time/ -will not hook.

Traction bars are only good ifthere the expensive ladder bar kind, I have the cheap universal ones and they really don't much for me but make alot of noise rattling. There suppose to limit wheel hoop, problem is he shouldn't have any wheel hoop issuse with a non stalled auto.

He doesn't need a shift kit, he'd be better off just keeping it in drive and letting the car shift it's self, the only good for that would be if you were going from a roll, because you can downshift and not have to have it kick down. He doesn't need some sifter, to shift his automatic.

If it's not stalled that car will not be ripping off the line, period!

His engine will make alot of power down low, but up top it wont be that great in the powerband. Remember a 383 stroker, is a 350 block bored .30 over with a 400 crank.

Man on those tires and not stall he will not beat you from a dig, and he will not beat you from a roll either, remember he said he was going to have posi you need to have him tell you what the rear end gears are. Also the tire you want will not do much for you once you get a stall and other goodies. You need to find some cheap drag rims and skinnys up front and go get some M/T ET streets for the back. You wont need a 50 shot, you should get it stalled and possilbe look into a cam or heads and cam, before you go wit hsome juice.

I am saving for stall/heads/cam for next winter I think so I figured some juice would liven things up some for this summer, but maybe I won't. And about the wheels/tires.. I do use the car on the street a lot so would the drag rims really be worth it for the times I would use them? if I did get some would probably keep the TT2's for street use or just drive with the drag rims on it? Sorry for some dumb questions but I'm young and still learning a lot. Thanks for all the help.

first off, the tires he has ARE NOT drag radials, they are just radial t/a's, a street tire, not the best in the world, but not the worst. Probably a little better than sumutomo htrz's. He's most likely going to spin through first, so if you can make it grab, you're good. If it is still a marine cam, it's gonna be made to have more power towards to top of the rpms, since that's usually where a marine motor is used, but I'm guessing that your power numbers should be about the same as his, and if you'll have 3:73's in by the time you guys race, you should be good I'd think, but I could be wrong, should be fun though.

I just say stop worrying about it, and get this race done. If your so unsure about racing him throw a 100shot on there to ensure you beat him

Yea I'm ordering my new tires next week, any suggestions? Want them to last at least 10,000 miles and be safe in the rain but hook decently. Probably be adding a 3600 stall at some point this summer so I guess I'm going to have to poney up some $ for good rubber.

Yea I cant wait to finally get this thing done too but just got freakin dumped on last night with more snow so it looks to be a litte ways away still. I'm not really worried about losing, If I loose I'll just have to mod and kick his *** the 2nd time around

exactly, as far as tires, I'm not sure, but I am sure that if you want something still good in rain, stick with street tires. I can say that the nitto NT555's, street tires, not the drag radials, grip very well, and have good rain manners, and I live in FL, and we get rain, so I can reccomend these, but you'll need to be carful on a launch with them with your power.

FINALLY have the car out of the garage after a long long winter, and should be swinging up that way tomorrow, got my tires mounted, but no gears yet =[ O well I'll just give her hell. IF he has his out and is ready to run, I'll post resaults after I get home tomorrow! It's finally in the 50's even though we got a snow shower earlier this week again the roads arn't bad at all.
