Default Had to pass on a potential great race

So I was on my way to the dry cleaners to drop off a couple shirts, and I saw a cop hidden pretty well off the highway in the bush. Well on the way back home, a 70 or 71 Chevelle 396 pulls up to me and wants to go. I yelled out the window that there was a cop just ahead parked in some bushes, but he decides to gun it anyway. What do you know, the po-po popped his ***. Any other time, I would have LOVED to race a big-block Chevelle! It sounded real healthy too....dammit.

Nice Camaro! Those guys at RPM rock! I had my formula worked on there and next is going to be my Z06.

Sorry you didn't get to race him. I was behind a modded Fox body today but I was in the family car with the kids

Forgive me if I'm wrong, but isn't a 396 a small block? Oh, and for the record.. I blew my motor racing the same kind of car. I'll nod the win to you, unless the Chevelle was hella modified. I killed him with the 396, and I killed him with his 468. Who knows..

You are wrong and we might forgive you someday. The 396 was a big block. Not saying there aren't 396 CI small blocks because there are plenty of them but they are bored and stroked 350's and 346's.

How does the old 396 fair against an LS1?

Stock for stock, with equivalent tires of course.

It could of been a setup, there have been situations like that where im from that can only come from a comic book. They'll do anything to catch us!

The stock 396s in a heavy chevelle wouldnt keep up with an Ls1 fbody but when you modify them anything can happen. The max rating on the 396 was 375hp if I remember...they put out more than that though.

F-body for the win. The Chevelle I spun a bearing against was stock, w/headers, a bigger carb, 4:11s. Dude said like 375hp or so, I was running just magnaflows and a hypertech programmer, and I owned him 3 times pretty badly. He rocked me from a dig until about 80 with his MT streets though.

Its all good. I guess I'm just elderly then because I remember those old carbed motors from my childhood. LOL

I'd be willing to bet the Chevelle isn't heavier than a LS1 F-Body. But I don't think a 396 Chevelle would do very well against one either. 375 HP was the top dog 396 and that 375 was using the old method of testing they probably really only made about 275-290 using the new method.

That might be a little closer but I think the LS1 would still take it. That is if both were stone stock. Start modding them and I think the big block would pass the LS1 pretty quickly though.

I'd imagine the LS1 would pass up top though correct?
