Default 65 mustang

Just got out of morning football practice. There is this kid on the team with a restored 65 or 66 mustang with straight pipes and he thinks its the sh*t. Well We were let out of practice I go to my car from the field house and drive out on to the highway. Next thing I know I hear this god awful sound of a rattle can coming behind me (and he is booking it) and see its him so I floored it and completely left him like a fat girl with leprosy. Some good morning excitement to start my day off!

289's even with every bolt on imaginable, including a cam was still a fairly weak engine.
Young man was in need of some schooling.

He had no chance without some really nice motor work.

Looks like you are the one in need of schooling. WHat do you consider a 'weak' engine?

He's got a good point. The 289 was never a very power engine until you got into internals and/or stroked it

LOL...depends on which 289. He says it like they were all the same.

What, ponygt65, is your idea of a strong 289?
Bolt on's plus cam makes for what kind of rwhp?
Not saying your full of it but "Modded" 289 stangs were a dime a dozen back in the day and I don't remember any deeper then the high 12's.
And those were gutted 4 speeds with 4.11 gears on slicks.
If I am clueless hook me up with a link so I can see for myself.

How about before I go through all of that, you tell me how many different 289s there were from the factory, what gear options there were and the hp/tq spec.'s on them. 1964.5-1967.....and engine codes to match.

I'm not going to spend the time if someone can't eve give me that little bit of info.

Here.....just a quick little search.

http://www.supermotors.net/vehicles/registry/11705

That was with a cam, headers....worse valves/springs than factory, 'narrowed' slicks, and NO HEAD WORK, 4.30s, and toploader.

Oh, and did I mention it is a falcon, not even in the lighter mustang?.....oh yeah, it's not gutted.

12.88@107 - how does that match your 'gutted' car again? It doesn't.

All the Ford 2-valve small blocks are anemic from that era except the HI-po's... But Chevy had the same issues....

Slow or fast who cares. Does anyone else think its pretty cool that a 17yr old kid is driving a 40yr old muscle car? Just think he was born when the car was already 27yrs old. Good to see youth still having interest in old cars.

To the original poster good kill in azz raping him. -Mark

Tell me about it. I had alot of people give me that 'oh ****' look when I had my 65 K-code Coupe at 24 yrs old.

And you're right........who cares. Lame debate, I'll leave it alone.

You proved my point.
A special order 289 only available from one particular factory and with all the goodies installed cranked out an *** kicking 280 hp and 312 lb's of tq.
Did I read that wrong?
289's just didn't get it done, plain and simple.

How did I prove your point?

First off, it wasn't a 'special order', nor was it available from one particular factory. Those statements alone prove you know nothing about 289s.
Secondly, that was REARWHEEL POWER, not ENGINE power.....so please tell me how that 289 cranked out 280/312.
Thirdly, Yes, you did read that wrong.

THe Hipo 289 STOCK was 271 HP. That motor had ALOT left in her. THey didn't even touch teh heads, which are the MOST restrictive part of that motor. 40 HP is gained from a good P/P job on those heads. That motor FROM THE FACTORY pushed 8k rpm's like it was nothing. THat is the EXACT same motor used in teh SHelby Cobra's and the Ford GT40s. Please tell me how those cars didn't do anything.......go ahead GENIUS.....let's hear it.

danny looks like you pinched a nerve...calm down pony you seem to have a vast knowledge on the subject and yes 289's can be quick in the right hands
