Default YAKSAQ: Yet Another Koni Shocks Adjustment Question

I posted this in another thread but maybe this way it'll get more attention:

I'm confused... I started adjusting my front shock firmness - and I kept rotating the adjuster with the allen wrench hoping I would eventually hit a "stop" point - but it seemed to continue rotating forever. It just kept going and going and going... Is it supposed to eventually hit one or the other end and stop? Or what am I doing wrong??

Thanks!

The Koni SA front shocks can be "swept" 10 times to go from full soft to full stiff. If you can do more than that then something is amiss.

flymybird... Didn't you just get your shocks? Have the even been put on a car yet?

If not they can't be broken. . There are in actuality about 8 sweeps of the adjuster in front shocks from soft to hard and are stops are each end. If the shocks are off the car, you need to hold the hat or cap so it cannot spin as you adjust them. If the hat spins you aren't acutally moving the adjuster, just spinning the entire rod.

are you sure about the 8 sweeps Sam? Mine have always been 10 sweeps, and I just got them back from Koni earlier this winter and they are still 10 sweeps. humm...

Used to be 12 years back until a redesign. Mine have 8, most all have 8... but it depends on how you count sweeps... 8 complete. If you get a little more some folks see it adding up to 9, maybe 10 I guess.... Part of it depends on where the hat is positioned (i.e. screwed on) on the shock itself.

I recommed for folks to range the shock in, see how many sweeps you have and work from there.

Yes, I did just buy them from you recently and I started working with them yesterday with the passenger side first. I had mounted the spring, still with compressors on it and tightened the mounting bracket, then when I went to adjust them I ran into this issue.

I just wanted to make sure I wasn't missing something. It seemed to me like I made a lot of turns and didn't hit the stops, but I will go back later today and make doubly sure I am doing it correctly now that I know for sure how it's supposed to act.

Also, what's the best way of tightening the mounting bracket without having the shaft spinning from under you?

Thanks!

I had my shocks made to go to all the way to '11'.

Oh, and I tighten the top strut nut on most assemblies with an impact wrench. Whatever you do don't try to hold the strut shaft still with vice grips or anything like that.

The nut that holds the shock mount on is only to be tightened to about 33 ft/lbs. You can use an impact, but I don't recommend it because you can either strip the nut (not so bad) or the studs (that's bad).

I recommend one of two things to hold things lined up.

1. A strap wrench through the spring and around the cap while tightening the nut.

or,

2. Replace the nylock nut Koni sends with a normal nut and LOCK WASHER which makes things easier as you don't fight the grip of the nylon locking ring.

I honestly don't recall the nut size.... I'm sorry. Usually recommend just taking the nut (or the shock) to a hardware store and matching it up.

I'm sure... The shocks are made in Holland.

10mm seemed to go on the shock pretty well. Hopefully that is correct.
