Default Using rear coilovers on F-body

I've read on a few occasions that its not a great idea to use coilovers in the rear because it puts too much strain on the upper shock mounting area. Could this area be strengthened or plated that way a QA1 coilover unit be used? I know that when minitubbing the car you have to cut pretty close to them, would it be beneficial to fix the weakness.

Its one of those internet myths that has been around since Al gore built the place.

The upper shock perch is a round and rolled cup. The upper spring perch is right next to the upper shock mount, but just flat.

So its not an issue in stock form.

People have been doing rear coil-over setups on these cars for quite some time...I don't personally like it because it puts the spring on the opposite side of the housing than it was stock, but I have no personal experience with it so I'll just leave it at that. For most people, the stock spring location is just fine with the aftermarket parts available.

Good to hear, just wanted to make sure I wasn't going to do more damage then good. I like the fact that I can fine tune spring rates other than the limited factory spring replacements.

Huh? Get a set of threaded perches (Ground Control, Global West, most any circle track supplier) and you'll have PLENTY of spring rate options.

I recommend you actually look at the upper shock "mount" for yourself. It's nothing special, because it's only designed for damper forces not to hold the car up. The spring mount is all double walled stuff and meant to carry the 700-800 pounds per corner.

And as Ironhead correctly points out there are plenty of choices in rate for springs that mount in the stock location.

There are may places to get rear springs in different rates
#125-#325 rates in #25 increments.

Apologies to Eric for posting non-sponsor links in this thread.
It puts him in a bad spot. I don't agree with the rule as it hurts
the end user. But money buys a lot of privileges.

I had posted links to those springs a thousand times before.

These cars are not rocket science or really anything special.
GM used many many "legacy" parts on numerous platforms.

5 1/2" pigtail springs are a very common spring and available
from many, many vendors, some of which are sponsors here.

That sounds even better guys, I already have some 3 way adjustable shocks I can use for now untill I get some QA1 and get a new springrate.

BTW my car is going to a dedicated drag car.

What would you suggest for the front because I have like 5 inches or wheel gap from all the wieght I have removed. Really would like to get the nose down.

These are from a site sponsor. i am ordering these this week. plenty of adjustment. the small coilover springs will fit the top mount according to Wolfe and these need to be mounted on the rearend to accept the smaller springs.

This is a very interesting setup. I haven't seen it before, most likely because I haven't researched this subject until now. It'd be nice if someone with experience using this setup would comment on how they like it.

does that make it so that your not using a shock mount anymore? or does it make it so that your now using the spring perch anymore?

When sponsors treat customers like they're stupid, then vendors reap exactly what they sow.

Just because a vendor pays $100 to put a banner on a site, doesn't make them the best fit in every situation.

Most shameful is an uninformed consumer taking a vendor's advice without any research.
