Default Don't let your friends work on your brakes.

I was finishing the rear brakes on my 99SS when a couple buddies came over and decided to help finish the driver side. I asked them if everything was tightened and they said "yup". Well driving to work today the bolt to the bracket came off so now the cailper is loose, basically hanging by the other bolt. So to get to the point I need the size off the bracket bolts. I know it's a 15mm head but don't know the size of the thread or how long it is. My car is 20 miles away from me at headquarters so I can't even look at it. Thank u in adavence and sorry for the venting.

The above is the part number for the front bracket bolts. The rears are 10229606.

This part needs to come from the dealer. Its a special high strength washer head bolt, which you could probably only match up at an industrial supply house.

Rgomez1787 - did you torque the bolts back on? They need to be torqued to 74 lb ft, which I doubt is possible to achieve (for most humans) with a normal wrench. If the torque isn't on the bolts, they will vibrate right out.

im constantly taking my calipers on and off when swapping brakes for track days. 75lbs isnt as much as you think. with a regular 1/2 ratchet and socket, putting a good bit of force on it will be close to 75. i always use a torque wrench on everything, and check all my bolts. unless i back off, i usually only need a half inch of movement from them torque wrench.

also, when upgrading to a C5 kit, they give you a new bolt and washer. im sure its grade 8/metric equivalent, but its certainly not a dealer only item. ive been using my bolts through more autoxs and track days then i can count for over a year, and theyre fine so far.

Right you are, I misread the post - thought he had finshed the rears and was working on the fronts

Yea, a 1/2" ratchet will do it. (I wasn't considering a 1/2" normal and think of 3/8" short handle wrenches as common.)

The caliper bracket bolts are all metric grade 10.9 bolts, but the fronts/rears are different sizes/styles. I'm sure they can be had many places, other than dealers, but I can't imagine where you could get them in small quantities. Regardless, local hardware stores and auto parts stores won't have them. Most of the dealers in my area can get them in a day.

I had the same issue, took the other bolt out and went to Napa auto to have them match it to the bolts they have. They should have them.

You should reword the title of this thread to "Don't let my friends work on your brakes"
