mostly it's just to save weight and clear room in the engine bay. I am doing mine because my friend has a 4 chan rear i'm going to buy but i have a 3 chan so just delete it and good to go haha. ABS is overrated anyway, i prefer driving without it. Only time it's been used or engaged has been in snow anyway which i dont drive it in.

I just re-used the existing tube nuts but I'm sure they have metric threads for metric tube. The forward port in the MC is for the rear brakes and I re-made the line using 1/4" tubing (had to drill out the tube nut slightly). The rear port is for the front brakes and takes a 3/16" tube w/o modification.

Ton of advantages for removing ABS, here's a few I can rattle off:

1) weight
2) appearance
3) no longer handicapped by having to use same diameter front/rear tires
4) increase engine bay air flow
5) more room for supercharger/turbo or custom cold air intake kit
6) less costly repairs for ABS system from failures
7) using an adjustable proportioning valve, you are able to tune the brake bias
8) easier to work on engine
9) easier to troubleshoot braking system
10) Simplified brake bleeding proceedure.

Kits are the easiest to consider as they are pre-made and pre-assembled. If one likes bragging rights to create their own custom setup, its not a time or really a cost savings mod. There's quite a bit of components needed...just the valve alone is ~45.00 plus shipping. I can try to help anyone if they prefer to create a custom setup.

add to that list:

- better brake modulation
- smoother/positive feel
- more responsive

The ABS unit, due to the little valves/pumps/etc inside it, adds kind of a "blah" feel as these have an amount of give. Its comparable to rubber vs. steel braided hoses.

I personally did my own setup. The only parts "needed" are a T fitting and some brake line. You put the T in the front (to split left and right), then bend up 2 new lines to connect from the master to the factory hard lines. Cost me perhaps $10 and a few hours of work.

2001camaroguy,

That was only a shortlist...lol there’s more that we could probably both think of. A bit of constructive criticism (or reading for others to consider). Your setup should have included an adjustable proportioning valve. That should bring your setup up to ~65.00 +tax or shipping (if you only had 10.00 initially invested, I'm not sure how for that little as brake tubing alone will be ~20.00 but I'll take your word for it).

Normally, the ABS system controls braking needs to an extent on the fly. As of right now, your braking system is not biased correctly and you're not taking full advantage of your brakes which will lead to longer more uncontrolled stopping.

It's actually quite a bit more complicated than a few t's. I think its great when folks design their own configurations as it’s nice to have bragging rights at a show or the track. I suppose in the end you may save 10-20 bucks over a kit...probably not if you include the time and gas it takes.

It's sort of like making your own lower control arms, you may save a few dollars but in the end is it worth it. I'd say yes only if you like to have as mentioned bragging rights.

You need a tube bender, flaring tools (two types) and quite a bit more to get it to the install point. Aside from the all the fittings needed (as mentioned the proportioning valve too)...brake line alone will cost ~20.00 unless you happen to bend and flare the tubing perfect the first time or don't care about how it looks.

hiltsy855 wanted a custom configuration which I helped him with the parts. I think his turned out rather nicely.

Kits are pretty fast to install. The most time consuming part would probably be bleeding the brakes or running the electrical line into the interior.

why can't you run different diameter tires with abs? i know the abs light comes on but don't the brakes function as they normally would?
