Default rack and pinion differences...

I did a search and found some info but not nearly enough. Once opon a time I had a 98 ws6 and was looking for a replacement rack, and purchased one that did not work. The steering linkage did not fit.

Oreillys shows two options on a 98-99 camaro/firebird and one of the two for the 98-99 is the part number for the 00-02.

http://www.oreillyauto.com/site/c/se...ird&vi=1305447

http://www.oreillyauto.com/site/c/se...ird&vi=1382475

The only differences in the two is the angle of the pinion in relation to the rack. The 00+ unit($244) is angled away from the engine more. The 98-99 ($144) is angled away from the motor but not near as much. I know that the $144 one will not fit an fbody car if it had the more angled on in it before. Are the k-members any different? Allowing the use of the less angled $144 ones to fit? The comments talk about a fe4 and f41 suspension..does the 98-02 fbody come with a f41 suspension? Could there be something else about that model that allowed everything to fit?

I have a LT1 car and I was told I need to change to an ls1 k-member, rack, and steering shaft to make it work. This is why I am trying to decide what is needed. Thanks.

I believe people have swapped to the more angled unit to gain better clearance for headers and stuff. Just needs the different linkage piece to connect it to the steering wheel shaft.

I'm planning on upgrading my rack with the 00+ LS1 rack in the future, probably this year. My rack is leaking anyway.

The more angled unit is the only thing I've found to fit on one of these cars and is also the only one I have seen come on them?

i know you can find out which rack you need by the rpo codes... my 98 trans am has the fe2 rpo code... i believe the base ls1 cars were fe2 and the ws6/ss were fe4 and i'm pretty sure the cheaper rack is for v6 cars, it will fit except that the steering shaft more than likely won't clear your headers because of the angle as was already stated... i bought my rack from oreilly when i replaced it and it was the more expensive one

Correct.

The more angled unit is for V8s.

The other more vertical unit is for V6.

If you go with a v6 unit on the v8, with longtube headers, it wont clear them.

If you have stock manifolds on the v8, the v6 unit will clear. As soon as you do headers, they wont fit.

As stated above the less angled rack did not work on my car. In other threads there have been people saying the cheaper one will not work on there car as well.

is there a way to tell what rack i have on my car besides looking at rpo code? i suspect someone changed it and may have changed to the less angled version

is there a part code on the rack somewhere i could look for? what would be the v6 part code for the rack?

Just look underneath your car, that's what I did. I could easily tell I had the one with a more aggressive angle.
