Default Brake Pads...

I bought the brembo stock replacement rotors and now looking for pads. Im pretty hard on my brakes and always have been. What are some good brake pads without breaking the bank? looking for stopping, little dust, life and quiet. Thanks

I prefer HPS's and that's what I street drive/autox on in my Camaro.... Front and rear are about $159. I keep lots in stock. But we also have other options too. Some are less money, some are more. Depends on power, dust, noise, etc., etc.

I find the HPS to be a great all around pad. ATE pads are really nice. HP Plus stop like freight trains but are dirty and squeal prone. I have PowerStop Z16's too, which work well, but don't have quite the power of the HPS. Anyway, I've got options!

Not to hijack a thread, but Sam, do you have any hard numbers as to which brakes are better, for examples, Pad A will stop in X feet, while Pad B stops in Y feet? Or, Pad A stops "a lot shorter" than Pad B? From your posts, you seem to have a more varied opinion on brake pads than for example, shocks, and since I'm going to be doing my shocks when it gets warmer, I might as well do the pads at the same time.

(I was going to check your site for this info but it looks like it's down.)

Stopping distances come down to more than just pad A or pad B, including tire compound, street surface, etc. There was a thread on here a while back about a big brake kit (about a month ago exactly....I know it was going on during my finals week from last semester )....Sam put his opinion in there as well I believe. From reading, it seems that the HP+ stop shorter than the HPS, but the HPS is a lot more street friendly. Trying a search for particular pads might net you a lot of results as well.

(As far as the site, I don't believe hard numbers are on there, but I'm having trouble with the site as well!)

As is normally the case 99FormulaM6r pretty much nailed it. There is no way to get a direct comparison except on the same car in immediate back to back tests. And 60-0 there is little to any difference. More from say 100-0 since the lower the speed you actually have a bit of excess power to overwhelm the tires (same reason that sometimes really powerful cars don't actually go 0-60 quicker, maybe slower but 1/4 mile better and faster).

HP Plus do have more bite. They grab harder, and faster.... but HPS aren't weak, just what I consider more driveable/liveable.

Stock OEM pads from GM. I think I paid around $120 for the front two...maybe it was for all four. I've tried several others and the stockers have the best of all worlds including a long life. Now if you are autoX'ing more then once a year then I'd suggest upgrading.

...haven't tried the hps though....

I run HP+ b/c I really run it hard through the mountains here in East Tennessee (think Deals Gap, aka Tailf of The Dragon). I've found ppl that say they run it hard, don't except for 1% of the time, generally. HPS is my recommendation as well. HP+ dust a TON, but I feel I get better bite out of them.

I would say 98-99% of ppl on this board would be very happy with HPS pads. I still use them on the rears, actually.

First of all, autox isn't the same as running around a road-course for hours on end, in fact some really hard canyon carving or stopping from a high speed is more abusive on brakes than autox is.

What we want for good autox pads is exactly what you want from good street pads. You want them to work without being hot. You want good bite, you want good linear torque curves.... I sell a lot of different pads, and some of my best friends run HP Plus, but I find them a little too abrupt in their action. I can live with the dust, and the noise but they are a little too on/off for me. In fact if you want more than HPS power, I'd put you on DTC-30's instead (which I also have). They have HP Plus kind of power, work cold, but are easier to modulate and have a more HPS like torque curve.

I can get you those if you like... I prefer the Hawk (and HPS's are generally a little less costly than say EBC Yellowstuff).

EBC pads are notorious for loading up rotors with friction material which causes brake judder in short order. Also, from the independent tests I've seen the coefficient of friction is erratic based on temp changes.

The ideal street pad should be predictable and linear across the entire temp range. My favorite pad is the powerstop z16 ceramics. They work well at low temps, grab amazing with some heat in them and refuse to fade even after repeated high speed highway stops. They're also virtually dust free and silent. You also can't beat the price, Hawk can't come close to touching the value of powerstop pads.

A F/R Set for f-bodies is only $90.00 shipped.

Well, I guess it's personal. I carry Powerstop too, they've been on the website for quite a while.... And I'll tell you that I have Z16's on my winter beater and on my sister's Subaru Outback. I'll also tell you that I prefer the HPS for cars I drive more spiritedly.
