Default SLP/Bilsteins, or wait for Konis?

So I've gotten completely tired of my 146k old shocks and springs, so I was going to buy a set of SLP/Bilsteins with a set of Strano springs. I was just wondering if it would be worth it to wait for another paycheck to fund a set of Koni's instead. The basic goal I'm looking for is better handling (not SCCA spec, but still decent) and a more comfortable ride in general. I like the idea of the Koni's being adjustable, but I'm looking for more info to sway me one way or the other.

I went with the Bilsteins. My decision was based upon pure cost and usage. I know that Koni's are regarded as the best for our cars, but they are also twice the cost of the bilsteins. I basically went with what is considered second best shock.

If you're going with a lowering spring I'd hold out for the Koni's. Not only do they work better with Sams springs, but they'll also last longer with them than the Bilsteins. Another bonus, as you mentioned, is that they're adjustable so you can tune to your tastes.

BTW, I'm not saying that the Bilsteins are bad, just saying that you might be happier with the Koni's even if it means waiting a little bit.

I'd say if you can wait a little to get Koni's then wait to get the Koni's.

Though improved ride quality is pretty subjective to one's own opinion. That being said, I think my setup with strano springs and konis rides really nice, and I'm pretty damn picky when it comes to ride quality.

Koni's are certainly the shocks that give you more flexibility... And yes, they cost more--though starting tomorrow they'll be on sale for a good bit off the normal prices... I'll be posting the new prices soon (I hope tonight, but I'm still waiting on some information).

Save for the Konis -- they reportedly hold up better with Strano's lowering springs, plus you get adjustability. Also, "comfort" does not = lowering springs...

You'll be fine--the sale is slated to run into May.

Hey sam, think you could possibly P.M. me a price for your strano springs, Koni single andjustable at sale price and some hollow swaybars at a military discount price?

i was just wondering what kind of discount you could offer me with the konis on sale and a military discount.

I had originally planned to buy your 999 kit with the billstiens/lowering springs/hollow bars but if your konis are on sale I would like to see the price difference

That was my thinking.

Now if only I could afford to match up my moog iroc springs with some bilsteins on the 87 i'd be as happy as a lark.

If you are running stock shocks with 140k miles, then new shocks along with lowering springs will probably still feel better than what you have now. I put on bmr springs with SLP Bilsteins, and the ride is better than stock springs with stock shocks. It feels a little rougher in cold weather, but on warmer days it's a smoother ride than I had before, even with lowering springs.

Okay, so I think I'm ready to buy the shocks and springs, but I'm just wondering, is there any additional hardware that I might have to buy as well?

For Koni, no. For Bilstein you must have stock shocks, or access the spring perch plates from stock shocks (or other Bilstein's that maybe someone took off) as the new Bilstein's do not come with the perches.

Some folks buy new upper shock mounts because they can rust and seize to the old shock and you can't get the apart--but I can't know if you need them until the car is apart. So I can't call them a must-have.

I had SLP Bilsteins installed on my car not too long ago and it's quite an improvement over stock. In addition to improved cornering, the car no longer wallows over bumps, and it doesn't fall into potholes like before.

Since the Bilstein install I've been driving in freezing temperatures and the ride is very firm. On really shitty roads there is some harshness, although no more than stock. We've been getting a few warmer days lately and I notice the ride isn't as harsh over broken pavement. When we get back into some nice 60 and 70 degree weather the ride should be very pleasant.

I would say $400 for a set of well-built shocks that make your muscle car handle more like a sports car and less like a Lincoln Town Car is not a bad purchase. While not as sophisticated as Konis, they are a nice replacement for the crappy stockers.

My car has 170,000 miles on it...All highway. I plan on buying new shocks. My question is do I need new springs or can I use my stock ones? If I can you my stock springs, I'm going with Konis...If not I'm going with SLP Bilsteins and Strano springs.

Quick Reply: SLP/Bilsteins, or wait for Konis?
