I based my assumptions solely on the photo. Look closely, it appears to have filler bulging along the top of the seam, but not where it separated. Maybe some close up pictures are in order?
I have to agree with Jason on this, to me it looks like the piece was tack welded at the top and then they forgot to finish the weld. But you can also see what Ryan was saying about the tube adapters, there is no bevel on that at all.
Either way I say UMI did a great job at seeing this and taking care of it. Yes it sucks to have to replace faulty parts, but its better than it breaking, or having the original manufacture say too bad.
