From my limited knowledge, I know that a progressive rate spring will allow for a smoother ride (lets the spring play a bit when not under alot of stress), and as the spring is compressed further (under braking, acceleration, or cornering) the spring rate increases, firming up the ride. They are well-suited for a daily driver car, while still provinding some extra 'push' in the twisties.

Pros: Nicer ride compared to a spring that has the same rate as the progressives max rate.

Cons: Harder to 'tune' (for the more elite guys out there) the shocks dampening rate to match a progressive spring. Adds a bit of guesswork.
