Yeah I had the same thing but not nearly that bad. My bolt was rusted on really tight thought. Also btw we have shocks in the front not struts technically.

Thats a very common problem.. You may have to cut the bolt off.. Ive had to in the past.. When you reassemble, just give everything a light coat of grease to keep it from rusting up again.

Mine was the same way, if not worse

When I reassembled everything I gave everything a coating of grease as well as putting RTV around the top of the shock mount where it meets the wheel well to seal everything up. To top it off I went with a stainless steel nut.

Hopefully your shock mounts arent fused to the shock rod, mine were and ended up ripping and I had to get new mounts

Its a known design flaw on these cars. That area is totally enclosed with nowhere for moisture to get out, thus leading to corrosion. I had to cut the nuts off of both of mine as well.

This happened on mine too. The nuts were so binded to the shock that we actually had to drill the center completely off for us to get the bracket off the shocks.

Same deal with mine. Shock nut was a pile of rust and the rubber isolator and mount were fused to the shaft. Had to cut everything apart.

i wouldnt call it a design flaw specific to these cars. Just about every shock i change at work needs to be cut off...Unless it bolts in on the top and bottom.

Struts dont usually have this issue but ours just look like struts. This is very common on shocks of that type, fully enclosed or not.

Yep, had the same problem. Had to cut it all apart. Did save the mounts though. They are NOT cheap, so save them if you can.

My '96 has NEVER been winter driven, as I have a 4x4 for that. HOWEVER, even my nuts were rusted, when I installed new shocks last year......and they weren't the original shocks!!

They seem to be pretty expensive through parts stores, but you can get them online for $18.50 each.

Same thing happen to me, I bought some new BMR springs to raise the car up a little, It had the sportlines on it. Well took the drive side out and it was fucked. So I called Mike at the WS6 Store and ordered some SLP Biliestins and a pair of Spohn ball joints to go with my BMR springs can't wait to put them in. But the shitty thing about it was I had to install that rusted piece of **** back in until I get my new ones in Friday.

I installed Bilstein struts with new mounts 4 years ago. Took them apart a few weekd ago to install my Strano springs and I find that the entire top of the strut was rusted. I could literally peel the threads off of the strut shaft with my finger. Also could't get the struts out at first, because the bolts ended up rusting to the strut mounts and causing the 2 rearmost nuts of each strut to spin inside the mount.

So I ended up ordering new Bilsteins ($250 later) and new Moog mounts.

I coated EVERYTHING with antisieze when I put it back together. Also painted the inside of the strut towers where the rust was forming in the body.
