The stock peice will flex under hard acceleration and allow your pinon angle to change, and can lead to broken u joints or worse. The aftermarket units will not flex keeping pinon angle were it should be, and with them not flexing it allows for much better application of weight transfer to the rear axle to help elminate wheel hop and keep your tires planted to the road

I know you can't understand this if you've never driven a car with an aftermarket torque arm but... I guarantee it is a night and day difference. You really will be amazed at how much traction you are giving up with the factory parts - even at a stock power level.

I have a full length adjustable Spohn that completely eliminated my limited and intermittent wheel hop while making the car drive (accelerate and brake) better. Two weeks later I moved the torque arm mount from the tailshaft to the transmission cross member and I felt another improvement. Later I added poly / poly adjustable lower control arms and an adjustable track bar. Now the car launches straight and doesn't dance when I shift gears. I'm sure if I drove the car on the track I would have seen an improvement in times but I'm more into corners and the car feels more planted in the rear. Now I need to replace all the old stuff up front.

The ONLY complaint I have is a slight bit of increased road noise and the need to massage the trans tunnel where the TA hits.

An aftermarket torque arm makes a huge difference. And you don't need to have a lot of power for the stock one to cause you problems. I broke 2 of them with just bolt-ons. After I spent the money on a UMI adj one I wished I would have done it sooner. It makes the car hook up so much better

I've read about other people on here breaking the stock TA with only 400rwhp.a after market TA with a different cross member can take the stress off the trans tail shaft.

It is just stamped steel and they flex easily. After market ones are tubular and are a lot thicker where they bolt up to the rear end.

A bent TA can cause all kinds of weird noises too. When I installed my 9" I found my stock TA was actually twisted and bent. With the 9" going in there was also a Jegster Tunnel mounted TA went in. No more squeals or squeaks, and the rear feels more planted than it ever did. GM skimped on the suspension parts just like they did on the rear ends.

lol I snapped my stock TA right in half matting it going up a small hill years back. thankfully I let off quick enough before my axle did a 360 but it still did some damage! blew the out put shaft seals in my brand new tranny and had to get ANOTHER LS1 D/S cause it got damaged from hitting the top of the D/S tunnel. And cause I was working so much that summer I had to pay to get stuff done, costed right under a grand in the end

Give me a call here at the shop and I can get you a torque arm for quite a bit better price than $300.
