Default Broken strut mount

So short story is I rebiult my suspenion.
everything is new.

The shocks I went with are QA1 18 way ajustable
and put in new set of Monroe strut mounts.

So month later I did hit some rough roads(Jerzy...)
and ripped out the center section of the mount.
Strut shaft dropped right into the shock and
I pretty much had no spring control after that.

Luckly these cars have upper and lower control arms
so everything stayed together.

But i never even seen this happen on any car.
And i do this type of work everyday.

So I'm just wanting to see if ANYONE has SEEN or HEARD
of that happening first hand.

I put my sh*t together right,
so I'm trying to rule out if it was a defect???
Kinda common with stiff suspenion???
Or a fluke and I just hit a pretty bad bump in the road???

Thanks for the feed back ppl.

Having had QA1's, Koni's & coil overs on the car, QA1's are the softest by far.
I say either that was a defect or one hell of a pothole.

Did you have the rubber insulator installed on top of the strut mount.

This.

If you don't have it in the top of the mount, the shock will tear out of the mount. Its a wedge-shaped piece that sits down in the top recess of the mount. Looks like this:

I cannot see how it could tear out if you did have it in place. That would have to be one huge catastrophic failure.

Every time i see one of these threads the op never installed the insulator. I guess they thought it was pointless to reinstall or it was aweight reduction mod. Lol

If everything was new it is possible he got new springs too, so he removed the old stuff and put in new stuff without taking apart the old assembly to notice the upper insulator piece.

I do wonder sometimes about the people who do take it all apart and not bother putting the piece back in though

It sounds like you didn't install the rubber isolator on the top of the strut mount. The little isolator disperses the load over a larger area so you don't have the issue you are currently having. The only times I have seen this issue come up is when the rubber isolator is left uninstalled.

I took old one out, inspected it and it looked good, so just cleaned it up and
beed blasted the A-arm support it sits in and a lil grease.

maybe it was just worn out.

im pulling everthing apart this weekend to see if it was a fluke.

talked to a Tech specialist at QA1, he said he never saw or heard of that.
prob a defect is the way its leaning right now.

yea I hear you on that. When you leave sh*t out in general the
engineers put it cause you think "know better", your asking for trouble.

Like I said tho, I did put them back but maybe just too old
and worn??

Not sure on that but either way I'm geting new ones
to CYA on this one.

thanks for the in put guys.

Makes me wonder if the metal was thin and the stress pulled the shaft and nut through the plate and through the mount... Freaky.

Definitely post pics and your findings when you take it apart. This is the first I've heard of this happening.

Get it apart and let us know what you find. I have never seen a strut mount have that issue for any other reason then leaving that little piece out. Maybe the strut mount was just wore out which created the issue. Hopefully there will be an obvious culprit when you get everything apart.

Im going through the same thing right now replaced my struts with koni stut and strano springs with new moog strutmounts couple years back. and just recently had the strut pull right through the isolator and strut mount on the passenger side. was wondering if anyone came up with why this happens or should i just chalk it up to the jerzy roads being the cause?

Cool

Your problem is the Monroe strut mounts.

They are crap. I went through two sets, because I broke them and went back to Autozone and got a second set free.

After the second set, I said screw it and got brand new GM ones.

Invest a little money and get the GM ones and be done with it.

They pulled through the isolators?!! Holy crap I don't see how that's possible unless the isolator wasn't made right. It's a big wedge of metal with a little rubber on it.
