Default snapped caliper bolt!

Seems like everything I do on this car something goes wrong.

Anyone else ever done this?

Doing the rear brakes, I torque'd the caliper mounting bracket to 74lb, as i was trying to do the same to the caliper onto the bracket I snapped the bolt... Anyone know the part number for a caliper mount? Also will i have to buy a new caliper or can I get the hardware seperate?

Drill a small hole in it and remove it with an easy out. Don't torque that bolt so high next time 25 ft pounds is more than enough.

What's an easy out?

25 pounds is really enough?

Its easier to get a new guide pin and bolt then try to mess with that.

Here are the factory torque specs, you went 3 times the recommended amount that is why it broke.

I'm a machinist so I would remove the broken bolt but since you don't know what and easy out is buy a new one. Google easy out and you will find the answer you seek.

Does anyone have the part number for a guide pin/bolt for the rear caliper of a 98 Z28?

the GM parts layout catalog shows the 'pin/bolt'(slider) as part of the caliper assembly and does not list a separate number for it. there should be aftermarket replacement kits available !

Just go to a decent local parts store and get new slide pins or a caliper hardware kit. No need to mess with drilling it out, the part is cheap. Follow the torque specs provided and you won't have any more problems.

Yeah, I'd like to avoid any unnecessary headaches. Would a universal/no name slide pin/caliper hardware kit work or does it have to be GM?

I have generic parts store stuff on my rear brakes (aftermarket brakes up front), and the car sees autocross and track days constantly. Never had a problem. See what the parts store offers and try to choose the nicest brand. Even when I had stock brakes up front I never had any issues with non-GM parts.

Also, while you are under the car, check the torque on the other slide pins to make sure they are at proper spec. If they are over torqued like the one that snapped, they will eventually snap sometime down the road. It's happened to me before.

Don't forget to grease the new pins, before you install them.

They sell the grease pins with bolts at autozone with new rubber covers at autozone for $8.99 as a brake hardware kit. They also sell refurbished calipers and brackets.

You should not need to torque brakes that high. I get them full leverage tight as they always seem to get tighter on their own

All fixed up now. Carlson generic caliper pin/boot kit worked great.
Greased up the pins with diaeclectric grease.

Lesson learned for sure on over torquing bolts!

Dielectric grease is for electrical connections not mechanical parts. You want to use silicone based grease so it doesn't get washed away.

since it's back together, dielectric grease is better than no grease. can always be taken apart, cleaned, and re-lubed in the near future.

I agree.

Permatex makes a grease specifically for caliper pins....
