Many people fail to recognize the importance of shocks and the integral role they play on a car's suspension system. They constantly dampen an oscillating 3500lb car throughout every bump and dip in the road and determine the outcome of a car's driveability and safety. Do yourself a favor and at least consider a decent shock like Bilstein or Koni. Yes they are not exactly cheap on many people's standards, but for what they do and for how long a good brand will last you and how they affect the basic comfort level of driving a vehicle, they are well worth the price of what their manufactures set them at.
KYB I've had experience with and they're definitely a stiff shock (gas-a-just, not the gr2), that would be my cheapest shock I would get
