Thumbs up UMI Releases New Product: Delrin Steering Rack Bushings for the 93-02 GM F-Body

Delrin Steering Rack Bushings for the 1993-2002 Camaro & Firebird
P/N- 2116

Priced at $49.99/kit

UMI Performance, Inc. is pleased to announce the availability of our new Delrin™ rack mount bushings. These are designed to replace the soft factory rubber steering rack bushing and provide a crisp, responsive steering experience. The factory rubber bushing tends to shrink and crack over the years which contributes to sloppy steering feel and reduced steering precision. The Delrin™ material is hard, durable and self-lubricating and ensures steering inputs are transmitted directly to the rack. These bushings install quickly and easily with normal hand tools and the kit includes a new UMI-built sleeve. 100% designed, manufactured and raced out of Philipsburg, PA-USA.

I'm a full UMI supporter as I have a lot of your products on my car but this price point seems a bit steep. $49 plus shipping seems kind of crazy for two pieces of plastic and a metal sleeve I can get from lowes for a few bucks.

I was ready to buy until I saw the price.

This is not much more than another company sells them for. You aren't going to get it for free and good luck finding the right delrin bushing at Home Depot

I meant the metal sleeve, not the Delrin. Lol

To me it seems pretty steep considering you can get an entire rebuilt rack for $200. Almost $60 for a sleeve and two pieces of plastic?

And it will still have a flexy rubber bushing in it...

How big do you think the market is for this? Production costs aren't free

Hi guys,

They can appear high but this is a low production item, it's not an item that sells a 100 a month that we can mass produce and they aren't built in China. They are built here on our CNC turning center using Dupont brand genuine Delrin. Low production low selling items require a higher price to cover the cost.

Would this add extra NVH?

I'm going to say no or at least negligible.

If you have already flipped the bolts on the rack it's easy, otherwise removing one of the rack bolts is a real pain in the ***. Bushing install is easy peasy.

I'm not sure I'm understanding this, but if there's still a rubber bushing in there how does this improve the steering feel?

Chris,
The Delrin bushing replaces the rubber bushing. The 2nd attachment point is solid.

I see, I guess I didn't realize stock bushing tapers towards the middle. I pictured a thicker piece of delrin in my head, not one that reduced diameter so much in the middle. I guess I'd need to see a stock bushing and the empty hole in the rack to wrap my head around it.

Definitely will pick up a set of these soon, love UMI products and the fact that you all are still investing in this platform.

I haven't personally done this, so unless whoever had the car before me did it, then it'll be a real nightmare.

Yes, I put a solid bushing for a C5 in my F-body years ago. It's an interchangeable part.

So this with like a Turn One pump would definitely make for a pretty solid steering setup?

It's on par with replacing motor mounts simply because the motor mounts need to be disconnected so that you can raise the engine off the K-member. I didn't replace the bushing when the engine was out, but I did know it was in the plans. Flipped the bolts the other way and put nylock nuts on them as an insurance policy. Paid off as I had to remove them recently and it was a quick job.

The bushing replacement itself is really simple. Old rubber one comes right out, new ones fell right in and the inner sleeve provided the tight fit.

Yep, that. Pretty certain we used the same vendor as I only know of one. Sounds like yours was the aluminum version though.
