Default Clunking in the Rear

Guys, I've had an annoying clunking noise coming from the rear of my car for at least a couple of years now. I've retorqued the LCA bolts, inspected the top shock mounts, the exhaust is tight and not hitting anything, the panhard bar bushings look good.

We did replace the sway bar bushings and end links, and that got rid of about 60% of it. Still plenty of clunking going on back there though. What else could it be? Anyone have a similar problem and solve it?

I had poly LCA's and replaced them with the stockers with new Mood "1LE" bushings a few years ago. As I said, PHB bushings look fine ...

When does the clunking occur?

Mostly over lighter road undulations, not bigger bumps or harsh impacts.

i have a thread detailing that the stock LCA bolts are smaller than the corresponding bushing holes......i believe that is a source of noise

Interesting. I checked out your thread. I can see something like this being a source of the problem, because sharp impacts don't cause it, as they compress the various pieces. But lighter undulations could cause slop for the bolts in the bushing shanks.

I know that the front bolts were replaced with longer and perhaps thicker ones when we installed SFC's. I seem to remember them being beefier than the stockers. Rears would be stock though.

RevGTO, did you ever resolved your clunking issue and what fixed it?

Yes, I did. It was caused by worn sway bar and end link bushings. You couldn't tell by visual inspection; it became suspect by tugging on the bar. Getting that resolved helped isolate clunking which was coming from the front. That resulted in new control arm bushings, ball joints, sway and endlink bushings. Free at last from clunking!
