Default Best Rack & pinion ???

Like the title says
Replacing the rack in my 97 Z that has a LS swap, so it has a LS1 K-member and rack
Trying to figure out which one to buy
From what I've read, there are at least 3 different LS rack & pinion units for the F-body
There's one that doesn't have a code with it (base model maybe)
The FE2, FE4 and FE7 unit
And the F41 unit
I guess they all interchange (never heard of a different LS k-member for a different rack)

Thanks,
Rob

They are 100% NOT all interchangable. All the cheap ones at parts stores are V6/LT1 racks that will physically bolt up but not all you to install the steering rack. Look up the Cardone 22-185 should fit.

See if there are any rack and pinion / gear and axle shops around you. I had one that had a factory unit they rebuilt. Couldn't ask for anything better.

Edited my first post
Probably wasn't clear that I was only asking about LS rack for a 4th Gen F-body

Thanks,
Rob

There are three racks made by AC Delco. You can get all the details by looking them up in the AC Delco Parts Catalog: https://parts-catalog.acdelco.com/acesCat.php? (Most of the online parts stores don't have all the finer details posted on AC Delco's site.)

Here's a good thread on finding the match: https://ls1tech.com/forums/suspensio...ck-pinion.html

The three AC Delco Parts:
- F41 suspension
~ One part number in the "Gold" product line
- (FE2, FE4, or FE7) suspension
~ One part number in the "OE" product line
~ One part number in the "Gold" product line

So I'm putting a LS motor in my 97 LT1 car
So I won't have the correct data on my car
With that said Is one of these racks for better performance handling then the others

Just doesn't make sense that they call them different things (FE2 FE4 FE7 and F41) and they are all the exact same thing

Thanks,
Rob

They're all the exact same looking rack-n-pinion but the F41 is the stiffer performance suspension handling one. Why not rebuild the one you already have?

I literally just went through this. It took 3 different racks for me to find 1 that fit an LS1. The V6 and LT1 racks would cause the steering rack to hit the motor mount. All the cheapest ones at the parts stores say they fit an LS but they 100% do NOT.

Yeah the V6 and V8 racks are not the same and you could very easily be sent the wrong one.

BTW - When you assemble everything, you'll want to put the bolts in from the bottom and use locking nuts at the top. (Unlike the way the cars were assembled from the factory.) This will help you change the rack with the engine in the car, if you ever need to in the future: https://ls1tech.com/forums/suspensio...-bolt-wtf.html
